Is it for business?
If so, I'd buy one pre-made so there's no finger pointing down the road if something breaks under warranty.

Where's the damned cloud???

The picture always show a cloud, but when I go into the data center all I see are racks and racks of servers. No clouds or rainbows in sight.

What's the end cost going to be on your home built unit?  I really need a NAS, but I keep dragging my feet on it.  I've currently got 2.25TB+ of data spanned across a handful of external HD's (and enclosures) (not counting the data on the built-in HD's on the machines).  I need to consolidate this.

Thinking of future needs, I want a NAS with at least 4 bays.  I want to have wireless access, so it can be a common data point for storage among our 3 laptops and my desktop (laptops are XP/Win7, desktop is a PowerPC Mac).  I'd also like to introduce a wireless print device, so we can print from any of the laptops throughout the house.

I'd like to know what your build will cost, as well as any recommendations based on my needs.
