Don't the credit reporting companies have to, by law, provide you with one free copy per year upon request?

I really didn't have any credit, until I bought a house. Went through a mortgage broker, who used a few tricks to get me through, on a VA loan. I paid off the mortgage, but STILL can't get a credit card. I have no idea why....

When I used freecreditreport.com, which is actually consumerinfo.com they wanted my credit card info and then mailed me my password, it took 10 days to get to me. The best service I found is http://www.creditexpert.com I signed up for the annual service and can pull my credit report anytime I want. I also get notified if anything changes on my credit report.
