MIAMI (AP)--Navegar Inc., the gunmaker that manufactured the TEC-DC9 semiautomatic weapon used at Columbine High and other mass slayings, has gone out of business, The Miami Herald reported Friday. State records show that Navegar and a sister corporation, Armak, were voluntarily dissolved on April 16. Ed Halley, spokesman for the local office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, said the firm gave up its manufacturing license sometime before that. Last week the California Supreme Court ruled that victims cannot sue weapons manufacturers for damages when criminals use their products illegally. The case from a 1993 massacre involving TEC-DC9 weapons of eight people in a San Francisco skyscraper. The ruling was considered a victory for Navegar. Following the decision, however, Navegar's lawyer Ernest Getto said he tried to notify the company but could not because the phone had been disconnected. He sent a telegram and unsuccessfully tried to send a fax. "I don't know what happened to them," Getto told the Herald. Navegar owner Carlos Garcia declined comment when reached by phone at his Gables Estates home. Andrew Molchan of the Professional Gun Retailers Association in Fort Lauderdale said he has heard that the "sale of the design is under discussion." He declined to name the company. The company, previously called Intratec, has gone through various changes before. Its primary weapon, a 9mm handgun, has gone through name changes following the 1994 Brady Act that outlawed the TEC-9 and TEC-DC9 versions. The Navegar warehouse is now empty and all of its manufacturing equipment has been removed. A "For Sale" sign sits out front, the Herald said.
