[ARCHIVED THREAD] - any free mp3 converters out there??

Want to convert some Cd to mp3. the searches just bring up evaluation ones. any free one out there??

I believe iTunes will rip a CD for you and the software is free.

i have been tryingto do it the win media. I must be doing something wrong. The files are cdfs. what am i doing wrong??

We've been using DB power amp for quite awhile, it works pretty good for all kinds of conversions.

Don't you need to buy Winamp Pro to get good quality MP3s from Winamp? I think the free one burns it to .wav and then to MP3, reducing quality.

First make sure you are using the latest version. It's up to version 10 now, and that is the one you want. Then as stated make sure you choose MP3 in the options.
Click on the Tools in the menu bar, select options. Then the Rip Music tab, in the middle under Rip Settings, there is a drop down menu that lets you select MP3. At the bottom is the sliders that allow you to choose the quality.

I use EAC Exact Audio Copy and LAME 3.97b2

The LAME encoder will give you the best quality MP3s. Settings and tutorials at the hydrogenaudio forum link I posted above.

CD audio is .wav and 100% lossless. MP3 is basically a compressed .wav file and is lossy. MP3s will always be reduced quality from the original CD. Using a quality encoder such as LAME helps.

Similar to a .bmp file vs. a .jpg. There is no picture loss in a .bmp file but the size is big. A .jpg is compressed and there is some loss of quality.
