Is anybody familiar with the pic titled "The Gathering"

Supposedly it is a photo taken in the late 1800's that includes the biggest celebrities of their day. I had never heard of it before today. Did a little poking around online but couldn't seem to find any 'official' type of studies that were conclusive one way or the other. Or, maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

Guessing it is probably a fake. I think the photo is real but those are not the people the photographer claims it to be.

If this be a dupe then call it and lock her up.

Otherwise, what are your thoughts?

Wow! How did all those men end up in the same place for that photograph?

"Liver Eating Johnson?"

Is the photo authentic or a photoshop of sorts?

THE GATHERING” 1883 At Hunter's Resort, Hot Springs, Montana.

One of the Most Intriguing and Talked About Photographs of the 1880’s!

Photography OR Faux-tography??

Known as the "Most Unique Picture Ever Made" the image is believed to have been taken at Hunter's Resort, Hot Springs, Montana in the Year 1883. The debate is still going on over the authenticity of this now legendary and still controversial image.

Pictured here are speculated to be some of the most famous (and/or "infamous") people of the late 1800's... Wyatt Earp, Teddy Roosevelt, Doc Holliday (John Henry), Morgan Earp, "Liver Eating" Johnson, Butch Cassidy (Robert LeRoy Parker), The Sundance Kid (Harry Alonzo Longabaugh), Bat Masterson, Harry Britton, Judge Roy Bean, Ben Greenough.

I haven't been able to find as much on the web as you would thing you would. Which has me scratching my head.

What I did find seemed to confirm that the pic was original and untouched and could be traced back to pre-photoshop day. The big suspicion is that those are not the people the pic claims. I am still fooling around with it. Nothing on Snopes but I don't use it that much so there could be.

Not quite a Robert Redford here:

Morgan Earp was dead in 1883.

Interesting.

After breakfast, I was planning on going through each one's dead date.

I kind of thought Teddy Roosevelt seemed older than he should have been. But I really don't know. Yet.

How about Hunter S. Thompson, John Cusack, and Johnny Depp riding around in a convertible with a blow-up doll?

#3 is not me.

TR was around 25 in 1883 and per wiki living in NY state. He did move to the Dakotas in 1884 to take up ranching.

Look at the contrast difference between 2 Wyatt Earp and 5 Morgan Earp. Both are wearing black jackets and yet Morgan, who is the farthest man from the camera, stands out the most while everyone around him is washed out.

Seems a pretty obvious fake.

It was the last quickening.....

Butch Cassidy would have been 17 and the Sundance Kid would have been 16. Most sources don't place them together till about 1896 or so.

Yep, that is what I came up with too. That pretty much seals the deal, in my opinion. I wonder why nobody else has latched on to that? Even if it is them, they didn't get famous until later on, didn't they? They were nobodies at that time.

I still believe the actual photo is real and the names are wrong. But I wonder if any of them are who the photographer purports them to be? Like that really is Old West celebrity X, Y, Z. And they thought they would label the others?

He had gone on a hunting trip to the Dakota territory in 1883 (that is when he bought the ranch), so it is possible he was there when the picture was taken.

But, does this look like the guy that is labeled #3?

The picture in the OP is real, just mislabeled.

Gomez Addams was in the back row.

Paul Ehrenfest (January 18, 1880 – September 25, 1933) was an Austrian and Dutch physicist, who made major contributions to the field of statistical mechanics and its relations with quantum mechanics, including the theory of phase transition and the Ehrenfest theorem.
