So I bought two bricks of .22 Federal at Wal Mart. While she was ringing me up she asked "is this for a handgun"

I asked," why does that matter?"

The lady was nice she said,"it's just a button they prompt us with to ask now."

This ever happened to you before?

Thanks.

Yup, I get asked every time I buy 9mm.  The first few times I thought "Well, duh" but it's really just a question that the retarded walmart employee must answer for the machine before they can continue.

Not to me personally but I've read other posts on here about Arcommers being asked that.

yep, have to be 21 to buy pistol ammo, 18 for rifle ammo. Some ammo can go both ways.

I got "oh, it says long rifle right on here, don't know why it asked me that" once.

Yes, and they are required to ask it IIRC.

Though some here take it as a personal insult and damn the employees for doing their job.   Is it stupid? absolutely, but big corporations have all sorts of "cover your ass" policies.

They only did this to me between the ages of about 18-24.

Now that I'm a little older, no more questions like that.

Never been asked that in WM, but have in gun shops. Application (handgun or long gun) dictates wether you need to be 18 or 21 to buy the ammo.

I once knew a LEO who used to buy bulk packs at Walmart to supplement dept.-issued training ammo for his swat team.  He would buy out the entire supply of WWB bulk packs using the dept. credit card.

"Is this for a pistol or a rifle?"

"Actually, its for submachineguns."  (Mp5s to be exact)

"It doesn't give me that option sir.  I'm gonna have to call my manager."

I lol'ed.

I always say both. When they ask to pick one I always tell them to pick one. I never answer the question definitively.

In theory, yes.  I have heard of at least one case where someone who was 18 and owned one had a damn hard time buying ammo for it, because no one believed him, even when he showed them a photo of the rifle.
