Good. It should be removed from all public oaths like that

Unless, of course, you think one has to believe in fairy tales in order to be able to launch a Sidewinder.

OH and just another day in Obama's new America. When morality is removed, then anything can be justified.

So, Jesus was a God-hating liberal too? Who knew?

If it's optional, I don't mind it. If it's outright removed, I do.

Yeah, were not a country founded under god, with "in god we trust" on our currency, whos congress opens with a prayer, and swear on a bible when "telling the truth."

No, Christians should never bind themselves to any oath as they may not be able to fulfill the will of God if they are bound to the will of a fellow-man.

You two should really get your own private thread together. Somewhere easily avoided by the rest of us.

You don't have to believe in magic in order to have morals.

Removing God from an oath has nothing to do with morality. Why should someone have to say "so help me, God," if they don't believe in God? It lessens their oath.

Its always been optional in the Navy and at the Naval Academy. Nothing to see here.

Having someone who doesn't believe in God swear to God means nothing anyway, so why require it?

eta: I have no problem with God in the oath for those who want to say it. Many do. No one should be forced to say the oath with God in it though.

Just shut the Service Academies down already.

If ROTC and OTS/OCS produce the same product for cheaper (read less tax money), then the rational thing would be to shut them down.

Or consolidate the big 3 service academies to just one location and then let the cadets decide in their late junior year which service to commission into.

This. I just didn't say it when I took my oath in '89.

People sure get hung up on making people swear an oath to their (G/g)od(s)/((ess)(es)) on this site.

It's almost as if they believe you have to swear fealty and obedience to their deity to be a real citizen.

What a joke. Tell me where some of that "In God We Trust" or "founded under god" can be found in the US Constitution; the law of the land.

How may atheists and agnostics have died for this country?

It's insulting that you think they should have to swear an oath to a god they don't believe in in order to serve the nation.

Same goes for swearing on a Bible before testifying on court. Do you think that means anything to an atheist or agnostic (or any non-Christian)?

I guess as things are set up now two gay or lesbian cadets/squids can room together in the dorms.

Get rid of God, get rid of God given rights.

I do. The two best officers I served under were an academy grad and a rotc grad. I don't want to see my alma mater closed down, but they don't produce anything that schools elsewhere can't produce.

If rights are truly god-given, then why don't all men have the same rights?

I've testified several times and never been sworn in on a Bible. I've taken both the enlisted and commissioned oath and wasn't forced to say God for either.

This is all much ado about nothing.
