Manufacturer has restrictions on "advertising" lower prices.  Requiring putting it in the cart first is a work-around to that requirement.

Usually it's because they have a contract with the manufacturer/ distributor that they cannot advertise below a certain minimum price, so if they are selling for less than that,  they have to do it this way.

Yes, the price won't come up in a web search.

Yes. It means the retailer is more interested in selling it to me, than selling it strictly for what the mfr wants it listed for.

You mean fulfilling contractual obligations?

Things like this are not a "loophole" they are examples of the vendor or end user doing what they agreed to do.

Usually it's like $5 off map anyway, I can't remember the last time I actually fell for that gimmick and bought something.

Minimum advertised sale price...........

Worked in a bike and ski shop in the early 1990s.  Oakley rep came in and saw the marked prices (barely over cost) on the Oakley rack.  The rep took the store owner to lunch and chewed ass about "We don't discount our product, get the prices back up where they are supposed to be or we'll yank your dealership."

Prices got marked back up, discount happened at checkout from then on.

I'd say most of the time it's a gimmick to make you think you're getting a great deal.

Same as when catalogs would show "Call for Price".

Who cares? And sometimes the price actually is worth the time it takes to make the click to see it.

In my experience I've found that you're wrong. Especially when I've previously been checking around on different website's prices for the same item.

I'm looking at an item at bhphoto. They advertise it at 378. Add it to the cart and it becomes 299, plus you get those free shooting glasses whether you want them or not.

Midway says 378. Add it to the cart and you can back-order it for 340.

TNVC says 378. No ifs, ands, or buts.

I'll add to cart any day of the week just to see. There's not a chance in hell I'd call for price.

...and that is a guarantee I'll never know the price. I sure as hell won't be picking up the phone.

To get me to buy from their competitor
Because it's generally cheaper than what others are advertising, and what the manufacturer wants the item advertised for.
We've been over this.
