Alright, whatever happened to good movies?  At least I can pop this sucker in whenever I am hurting for a good flick.  Decent plot, good shoot-out's, good acting, originality, subtle references to "Butch Cassity and The Sundance Kid."  Good shit.

Damned skippy it was a good movie! Among the best.

Not as good, but pretty enjoyable:

I found the story rather contrived. At least not what I expected from the guy who did the usual suspects.

HOWEVER: The gunplay in that movie was par excellence and it deserves 100% respect for that factor alone. This is why I own it on DVD

A funny line indeed, but you just (unwittingly) captured everything that is wrong with hollywood, or more accurately... the idiots that spend money supporting them.

- I will not $ support a movie that has the promise of the latest "Buffy" or starlet of the OC topless.
- I will not $ support these retarted independence day "all effects, no plot" blockbuster cock-knockers
- I will not $ support unoriginal fucking remakes that capitalize on our loyalty to a great movie but never deliver

Finally I will watch Assmasters VII, I may download it, and I might even skin the knuckles, but I will not $ support it either

"Action movies" is as 2-word concept. Action being self explanatory. "Movie" on the other hand requires among other things, a story. Even the porn industry has acknowledged this.

Good gunplay is something very rare in Hollywood... perhaps enough to support a movie on that aspect alone given the rarity it is.

HOWEVER: it's nowhere NEAR enough for a great move on its merits alone.

EXACTLY. It is good enough for me to rub one out to FOR FREE. If however my gf suggested that we BUY some movies so that we could get into the mood or explore something different, I would not support Assmasters VII. It is un-innovative and boring.  In the case of the hypothetical I would consider movies that had

1. Blistering sex scenes that used some sort of imagination
2. innovative technique
3. humourous storyline

(in that order)

Couple of things:

I will not $ support a movie that has the promise of the latest "Buffy" or starlet of the OC topless.
I sure will!  Now, with that out of the way, on WOTG:

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW.  DON'T SPOIL THE MOVIE FOR YOURSELF!

OK, here's my take on WOTG: you have to watch the movie a couple of times to get all the "good" plot stuff.  I may be stupid/dense, but on the first run through, I missed a lot, such as: James Caan is the surrogate's father, and that this scheme is her "retirement plan" for him; James Caan telling Benicio Del Toro in no uncertain terms he's the surrogate's father, the nervous Dr (son of the guy paying the surrogate) being in love with her, and being the surrogate baby's real father.  Crap, I watched the movie two or three times, and each time found myself going, "Oh!  I get it now!"

Great flick, with some of the best lines of all time:

There's always free cheese in a mousetrap.

Fifteen million dollars is not money. It's a motive with a universal adaptor on it.

Karma's justice without the satisfaction. I don't believe in justice.

So, you the brains of this outfit, or is he?
Tell ya the truth, I don't think this is a brains kind of operation

I think a plan is just a list of things that don't happen.

Plus, the dialog between Del Toro / Phillipe and the guy at the sperm donation clinic is too funny to believe.

A few of my favorites.  The Maltese Falcon, Dirty Harry, Chinatown, Bullit, True Grit.  Those are just the ones that come to mind quickly.

I think we, as moviegoers, are willing to accept less than a good movie just to get a single thing we like, i.e., good shootouts, good car chases, etc, etc.  My FIL (well, ex FIL) is one of the "action at all costs" guys, the Matrix movies are some of his favorites.  While I like the first Matrix, I thought 2 and 3 sucked.

Hollywood CAN produce good movies that have it all, but WILL they when we're willing to watch B grade movies just to get that one element we like.  I'm like Pulpsmack, I won't pay money to watch a bad movie just to get one thing out of it I like.  I want it all or HW isn't getting my dough.

The script had some good lines & the final shoot-out is fun to watch. The bounding tactic during the kidnapping is basically sound. I thought the acting sucked aside from Caan, Geoffrey Lewis, and Del Torro.

Terrible?!  I thought it was pretty creative, at least compared to the freeze dried, recycled dribble that they have been putting out for the past 15 years,  I thought some of the tactics were on point too.  I remember some of my firearms instructors playing a clip from the movie, I think it was during the one handed reloading phase.  Not saying that it lends any creadance, but interesting none the less.

The lack of zombies or communists does not serve as the primary indicator of sophistication. The lack of peewee herman or pauly shore is a much better milestone. I'd go so far as to say a plot involving a zombie peewee herman might go full circle and blast WOTG completely off the sophistication scale.

I liked the hell out of that movie, despite hating Juliette Lewis.  Great lines and dialogue throughout.  The action was almost icing on the cake.

I heard that the movie was filmed on a shoestring budget, so the director used his own brother (active Army SF soldier) as the technical firearms advisor, which is why the film is so accurate in that department.  They even live fired all the weapons used to capture the actual sound effects, which were used in the film.  This is why the guns sound so much different than in any other film.

Anyone know for sure if the above is true?

Here's some trivia on the movie from IMDB.com.

Nicky Katt (Obecks) did all his own stunt driving.

The names of the main characters, Parker and Longbaugh, are the real last names of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The store clerk seen at the 7-11 truck stop (the one who shares a cigarette with Longbaugh) is the wife of the film's composer, Joe Kraemer.

Benicio Del Toro coached Nicky Katt in his Spanish dialogue scenes.

The hotel (where the parking lot gunfight takes place) is said to be in the town of Salsipuedes, which is Spanish for "get out if you can".

The unusual car chase scenes after the kidnapping was Benicio Del Toro's idea. He suggested it to Christopher McQuarrie after watching the show "Cops" (1989) where a couple of criminals did the same when cops were chasing them.

Christopher McQuarrie had written considerable amount of dialog for Longbaugh's character, however Benicio Del Toro suggested the "less is more" approach and had him cut down his lines.

>>> WARNING: Here Be Spoilers <<<

SPOILER: In the audio commentary on the DVD it is confirmed that in the alternate ending, Parker and Longbaugh do die due to their gun shot wounds.

SPOILER: The Mexican brothel scene when Longbaugh (Benicio Del Toro) slaps one whore on her behind as she is running out, was unscripted. Christopher McQuarrie privately suggested it to Del Toro who was very resistant to it. The extra playing the whore was not told about this. As Del Toro feared, she came back after the shot was filmed very angry and complained how she was slapped. Del Toro immediately turned to McQuarrie and said "he made me do it!!!". (From the director's commentary on the DVD).

Which begs the question, is live ammo so much more expensive?

The audio in WOTG kicked ass! You almost expected to see bullet strikes in the background during the gun fire, and not just puff on the dirt or the black powder filled painballs on the wall. I think a lot of "action" movines would benefit from recording thier own audio rather than using stock recordings. Look(listen) at the scene in Collateral. You hear the sound reverberating off the walls in the alley. I am glad I didn't go see it in the theaters around here. I would have come out with ringing ears.

The Galil laying down a stream of round inches apart was kinda silly, but still very cool looking.

On the commentary the director says his brother is a former Navy SEAL and trained the actors on how to shoot, tactics, realism, etc. I'm glad some fellow ARFcommers actually like this movie too and I'm not the only one who appreciates this flick. It's not perfect but still a must have for me on DVD. Realize that this was really a anti-Hollywood flick. They will probably never make anything similar to the way of the gun for quite a while.

Sure but in Hollywood where all "TRENTE OCHO BANGs" make really loud sword noises when the light hits them, and the ammo fairy is never on strike...that movie has some DAMN good fights (other than wasting all that 308 on a wall--in a straight line).

Not on my list for BEST movies, but one I am looking to buy if I find it for $5 at a store. Heck maybe someone here who hates it so much would mail it to me?

And while some of it is cheesy...there is a bit more going on. Ever see Hitchcock’s ROPE?

My favorite line...which haunts my belt every time I consider a surefire carrier...is when Benicio Del Toro exclaims to James Caan, "Frikin utility belts!"

Ha ha ha batman!

Not the greatest movie of all time, but anytime a pro-gun screenwriter/director makes a movie he's got my vote. And come on, the gunfight verses the bag men was one of the greatest shootout scenes in recent times. Mcquarrie does a great job of choreographing the fight scenes and injects some good laughs throughout it. Like when Ryan Phillippe jumps into the fountain, or when the bag man gets shot in the nards with a shotgun, or when the other bag man gets caught in the crossfire... etc etc.

Haters wanna hate, ballers wanna ball.
