I caught about ten seconds of Point of no return the other day
I have seen both of them at least five times
they are both similarly "realistic\believable"

Sooo...........what says Arfcom........get both?

If you liked "The Professional", I think "La Femme Nikita" (not the TV show) would be a better choice. I don't like rip-offs, and "Point of No Return" was a rip off of Nikita. Although, Bridget Fonda is always a welcome sight in any movie.

La Femme Nikita p0wns Point of No Return. The latter just sucked.

BTW, there's a euro-edition of The Professional. There are a few extra scenes.

didn't know about any euro-edition(whatever that is)I will look for it

I did not like the original french version very much, although it was great comparing the two
I really thought the rewrite\copy\ripoff was better, mainly cultural reasons most likely

Leon was a badass, should I have a thread...........Clint Eastwood vs Leon who would win?

The Euro veresion has scenes of old-man/little-girl sex in it. In America we call it kiddie-porn

You're right, they both sucked.

I'm sorry but there was just something creepy in the story of "The Professional".

nope. portman's character pushed the limits to a greater degree than in "the professional", but no sex was implicit or explicit. anyone who says otherwise is really telling us about what goes on in his own mind.

As the Sci-Fi thread got me thinking about Anime. I'll nominate two ground breaking classics, Ghost in the Shell and Akira.

No, more like a general idea, like, Hey Guys! Let's herd these cats that-a-way!

Great movie.

Implied, but very ambiguous, sex. And the later behavior was consistant with "no women..." So I don't think they did the deed. I sort of hope not, it would lessen the warior moral for me. JMO.

The scene at the end, planting the poor, god forsaken plant, was wonderful.

Great movie. A true classic.

Yeah, I don't see him humping her either, doesn't fit with his "ethics"

No comment about the other movie?

my apologies for being curt. to be fair, matilde was quite frank about sex, and leon kept saying, essentially, "when you're older". hence portman's line:

"i'm the one you should water if you want me to grow."

[ETA: on-topic, "point of no return" wasn't a remake, it was a shot-for-shot ripoff of "nikita". horrible dialogue, leaden acting, and piss-poor direction. don't waste your time. just pick up the subtitled version of "nikita", which is an outstanding movie.]

"The Professional" or "Point Of No Return" which was better

Point of No Return is nowhere near as good as The Professional. WTF have you been smoking?
Link Posted: 8/1/2005 10:22:02 AM EDT
The European version of Leon/Professional explored the realationship a little too much for my taste.

I try very hard to stay away from anything with the name "Fonda" on it.

The man/child aspect was a little creepy, but so was Leon. But I loved The Professional. Point of No Return just did nothing for me.

YES! Oldman is awesome in that movie. The expression on his face when a bullet rips his suit jacket was hilarious.

Point of no Return was horrible. Bridgette Fonda was not even close t being convincing as some super assassin ass kicker. Too skiny and frail looking.

The Professional was better IMHO. I think I've seen it 15 times or more.

Your loss, IMHO.

Henry Fonda was a great actor and was in some timeless film classics (regardless of how screwed-up his kids & grandkids may be).

Leon knew how to take care of business. Watch Leon's use of weapons and cover closely. Nikita would have gotten killed in the first five minutes, shooting without aiming, etc. The RPG would have toasted her in the kitchen scene.

I have the Uncut International version of LTP... In fact, I can damn near recite the whole movie.

There is no sex scene.

HOWEVER: Matilda gets significantly less innocent in the uncut version... scenes of her shooting people (paintball training gun, Leon supervising), making further attempts to seduce Leon, etc.

To anyone who would try and call it Lolita... It's not. It just isn't. In order for Lolita to work (in the real Nabokov sort of way), the older guy has to be willing.

And I just don't read Leon as being willing... LTP is no more a two-way love story than "Man on Fire" is.

Something I have noticed upon repeated viewings is the question of "How innocent is Matilda? Is she really in love with him, or is she playing him?"
Think about it. She uses the "I'll die tonight" line with him, and at the end of the movie with the old woman at the school. The only people who don't fall for her "help me" act is Gary Oldman's character, and Tony... the guys who don't get played by anyone.

However, throughout the movie she does irrational, stupid shit that puts Leon at risk. Sure, in return he decides that he wants to keep living... but he also dies because of her.

So was she a victim of circumstance, or is the whole movie (after her family gets killed) orchastrated on her part?

Recall, at one point they have an exchange where she says "I'm as grown up as I ever will be, I just have to get older"... and he replies that he's the opposite. In a way, is she playing the part of an adult, manipulating a naive child? (Albeit, a meat-eating super-assassin child...)

(I have to confess, every time I get to the scene where he has the gun to her sleeping head, I keep yelling "DO IT!!!" at the screen...)

Anyway... this rant is worth exactly what you paid for it!

I've always been partial to "Barbarella", if only to spite Hanoi Jane <commietraitorbitch!>.
If she could I'm sure she'd buy up every reel, laserdisc, VHS/Beta tape & DVD of that movie, have a bonfire & convince her fellow traveler leftists in the Ministry Of Truth liberal media to erase any mention of it/deny it ever existed.
