Did a small amount of research on this far a college class along with the North Hollywood shootout.  I think this is USA's answer to FX's 44 minutes.  From what I remember a police helicopter was shotdown.  This event was just a start for the move to semi autos and patrol rifles for general police work.

Thanks for the link, I'd forgotten about the IEDs.  Specifically, they made rifle grenades from coke cans and wooden dowels and launched them from 12ga shotguns.

Before North Hollywood, Norco was one of the "big" incidents that got routinely beat to death in in-service training. I can't recall  exactly how many times I saw THAT video tape!
