It means you have been beaten quite badly and had your tucus handed to you.
In other words: you got your ass whupped.

It started in the online games (probably Counter Strike), I do believe.

Shut down.  For example, some idiot comes on here bragging about how their car can whoop the shit out of everyone else's, and a board member takes the time to research statistics and prove them completely wrong, thus throwing it back in their face and exposing them for the dickless wonder that they are.

That's just an example, though.

It is to "dominate" or  "diss"  very harshly

there are variations on the spelling as well, ie pwned or pwn3d, even PWN

just think of it as " I own you"

You use it when you smack some one down.

Good question - I've been wondering too.  Maybe it's a slavery reference.

It often seems linked to the practice of intentional misspelling - another mysterious practice.

From the Jargon File:

owned

   1. [cracker slang; often written “0wned”] Your condition when your machine has been cracked by a root exploit, and the attacker can do anything with it. This sense is occasionally used by hackers.

   2. [gamers, IRC, crackers] To be dominated, controlled, mastered. For example, if you make a statement completely and utterly false, and someone else corrects it in a way that humiliates or removes you, you are said to “have been owned” by that person. When referring to games, “I own0r UT GOTYE” means that one has mastered Unreal Tournament, Game of the Year Edition to such a level that even the hardest AI characters are mere lunchmeat, and that no ordinary mortal player would even receive a point in competition. There are several spelling variants: 0wned, 0wn0r3d, even pwn0r3d. Hackers do not use this sense.

Actually, it's spelled 0wned (with a zero). Came out of the days of Quake 1, when one player would totally dominate the others. He would "own" the other players. Started off as "I/he/she owned you!", but got shortened to "owned", and then "0wned" when "leet speak" made it's way into online gaming.

So the word "0wned" makes more sense than "gotcha!" or something like that?  I mean "0wned" implies the exchange of currency.  Like "I own your ass because I bought your soul" or something.

Is it that 0wned is just a random word that some 'puter geeks decided would mean something cool, but in fact makes people look rediculous when they say it?

dragunov
Its not "jive" talking..
Its slang used in the online gaming comunity such as Quake, CounterStrike, etc,
that has spread out to the web forums/bbs communities.
Very modern day slang.
ETA
It has spread out to conversational English as well but not to the extant of "jive"

"Oh stewardess, I speak jive."

pwned comes from somebody making a typo because the P key is next to the O key.
The pwn3d is a derivative from the haxx0rz community.
Mostly 14 year old geeks.

beacause the o and the p are close together.

and you are drunk and hit pwn instead

Its not that new of a phrase... my dad says it and Im sure he aint been playing Counter Strike late at night

I've always took it as "He totally schooled/dominated you" and thusly, owned you.

So basically the term came from these kids who play computer games all the time?

I still don't understand the poor spelling.  Is that because it's mostly academically inferior children who play these computer games, and they simply cannot spell correctly?

That still would not explain the 3 substituted for e...

Explanation anyone?
