A psychology professor accused of pulling a hate crime hoax by vandalizing her own car with racist and anti-Semitic graffiti has been convicted. A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury in Pomona last week found Kerri Dunn guilty of filing a false police report and attempted insurance fraud, which is punishable by up to three-and-a-half years in prison. When the apparent hate crime was initially reported on March 9, the campus and Jewish communities reacted with outrage, staging day-long sit-ins, teach-ins, forums, and rallies. Dunn, then an assistant visiting professor at Claremont McKenna College, east of Los Angeles, reported that her 1990 Honda Civic had been vandalized, after she had given a lecture on racism. The car's tires had been slashed, windows broken, and spray-painted letters spelled out "Kike Whore," "Nigger Lover," "Bitch" and "Shut Up," as well as a half-finished swastika. Dunn also told police that $1,700 worth of personal property had been taken from the car. In initial news stories, Dunn, a 39-year old white woman, was said to be converting from Catholicism to Judaism. As time went on, this aspect became increasingly vague, changing from "undergoing conversion" to "considering conversion" to "a possibility of conversion." "No one seems to have any first-hand knowledge of this matter," said education professor Jack Schuster, a faculty leader on the campus Hillel Council. The day following the incident, classes were canceled for anti-racism and pro-diversity demonstrations on campus and at the other six private colleges and universities that make up the Claremont Colleges consortium. The regional chapter of the Anti-Defamation League contacted college officials and the Jewish campus community to offer counsel and assistance. Hillel Council director Rabbi Leslie Bergson reported that many hitherto indifferent Jewish students had shown up at Hillel and that the near dormant Jewish Student Union was planning new activities. One week later, during a campus vacation break, came another bombshell. Claremont police announced that two witnesses had "positively identified the victim as vandalizing her own vehicle. Additionally, interviews with the alleged victim revealed inconsistencies in her statements regarding the incident." The FBI and the county district attorney entered the case, while Dunn consistently denied the police charges. During the trial, the jury was not asked to decided whether Dunn had vandalized her own car, but rather if she had filed false reports with the police and her insurance company. After the guilty verdict, Gary Lincenberg, Dunn's attorney, said that he intended to appeal the verdict because the judge had barred crucial evidence. Sentencing is set for September 17. As student president of the Hillel Council, Dror Chankin-Gould, 20, had been one of the organizers of the early anti-racism protests. Dunn's conviction, he said, "Doesn't change the fact that we did the right thing. We responded vigorously to an anti-Semitic slur and we can be proud of that."

If the words "Italian" and "Irish" were substituted for the other racist graffiti, would this even make the news on a local level? Somehow I don't think so.

Arsonists Destroy Jewish Center in Paris

PARIS - Arsonists destroyed a Jewish community center in eastern Paris in a pre-dawn attack Sunday and left behind anti-Semitic graffiti, police said.

No one was hurt as flames tore through the center located on the first floor of a six-story building. The center, which served as a meeting place and cafeteria for the elderly and disadvantaged, was gutted, rescue officials said.


Firefighters were called to the scene at about 3:30 a.m. and extinguished the flames by early morning.


Authorities immediately suspected the fire was set deliberately. Inside the building, investigators found anti-Semitic graffiti and swastikas scrawled in red marker. One message read, "Without the Jews, the world is happy," while another said, "Jews get out."


Visiting the site, rabbi Claude Zaffran said he was "deeply pained and distraught."


"We're very worried," he told The Associated Press. "The justice system must do all that's necessary so that there are convictions and real, effective sanctions."


France has suffered a long wave of anti-Semitic violence since 2000, coinciding with worsening tensions in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians.


Some of the violence has been blamed on young French Muslims, although the Muslim community itself is also a frequent target of racist attacks. France has the largest Jewish and Muslim communities in Europe.


French President Jacques Chirac condemned the center's destruction and said the government was "determined to find the perpetrators of this unacceptable act so that they can be tried and convicted with the greatest severity" that the law allows.


The case has been referred to Paris criminal investigators, the Paris Police Department said.


French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe and Paris Police Chief Jean-Paul Proust all visited the site, on a winding street lined with shops.


Proust noted that the fire could have been deadly, while Raffarin promised that the arsonists would receive tough punishments.


"I came here today to say that France cannot accept a trivialization of anti-Semitism," the prime minister said.

A couple of points. As someone pointed out, this woman is a throughgoing nutjob/oppression hustler. Back when this happened I did some reading on the college where she was teaching/lecturing/whining. It is, if memory serves, a consortium of small quasi-independent schools with a history of loony leftism. Think about it: it's the kind of place where students and faculty think that public protest is a meaningful response to what is believed to be a private criminal act. What kind of idiot thinks that a neighborhood antiburglary march and be-in will discourage burglars? It seems to be the sort of place where people whose academic and real-world education ossified at the age of 19 are paid princely sums to inculcate the young in the ways of passionate ignorance. I suspect that the convicted goofball was "considering" converting to Judaism only because she couldn't find a way to convert to African-American. She craved minority status in order to validate her feelings of oppression. Whatever else they do, they should bar her from teaching and from adopting children, and tie her tubes.

This sounds like every Kerry supporter I've talked with.
