Workers Hurt in Explosion at Ammunition PlantINDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- There was an explosion inside the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant Tuesday, and workers were hurt.
KCTV5's Robert Lyles reported on "KCTV5 News at 6 p.m." that what exploded inside the plant was a .50-caliber live round, the same kind of heavy bullet being used by U.S. soldiers in Iraq.
The explosion sent three workers to two separate hospitals with burns and shrapnel wounds, Robert reported.
A spokesman for Lake City said
the .50-caliber bullet used in guns mounted atop tanks and Humvees had just completed production and was in the inspection section of the plant at about 11 a.m. when the bullet
jammed in the inspection machine.A worker tried dislodging the bullet, KCTV5 News was told by fellow workers,
with a hammer, and that was when the single round exploded, burning the hands and face of one worker and spraying two others with shrapnel. Robert said one of those took a hit to the hip.
KCTV5 News was not allowed inside the plant, but it was not shut down.
The spokesman said the three employees' injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
An investigation was expected, Robert said.
what a dumbass! "Hmm...looks stuck...mebbe if I whack at it with this hammer it'll fix it!"
