The following is a cut and paste from a Gun debate article from Fox News website.

"But observers note that while gun control groups will be putting pressure on candidates, Republicans looking at the 40 million NRA membership, as well as Democrats seeking broad support from moderate and even conservative voters, may be still inclined to resist.

Is this true, or is this number out in space somewhere? I remember not too long ago the NRA was struggling to get to the 2 million mark.   TT

The NRA wishes it had that membership.  There are at least 50 million gun owners.  The NRA probably has fewer than 5 million members.

40 million members would make what.... 800 billion requests for more money being sent out each week?

How many users here aren't NRA members? Bet the number would open your eyes.

Many people do not realize that NRA memberships can be had for only $10.  It also seems as though they do not relentlessly spam me when I get the ten buck membership, either.

Something to look into, for those tired of the spam.

If the NRA had 40 million members machine gun ownership would be mandatory.

Give it up.  Without the NRA, you wouldn't be on this site right now, because our hobby would be a thing of the past.

Gun owners that bitch about the NRA are no better than the scumbags who revel in the protection of the 1st Amendment to spew garbage all over the rest of the constitution.

I'm a life member, and proud of it.

While I share your view that without the NRA, our RKBA would be in a heap of trouble. I don't subscribe to the notion that one can't bitch about the NRA's waste of resources with all of their spam. They'd be FAR ahead if they used those resources towards the cause instead of sending me crap that ends up in my garbage can.

Life member. Like it or not they are the biggest and most respected pro second ammendment civil libertys group. They have approx 4million members. Thanks in part to there late president Charles Heston. Though they did not do enough in 1986 to stop the machine gun ban. They payed. Now they are back on our side. I can put up with a little junk mail and give reg. To there ILA. They are not just for hunting anymore!

You should buy a friend a membership for every gun you own.  You can get the full package for $25.00 if your a cheap bastard.  I've donated over 50 NRA memberships on this site alone.  Scarry how many gun owners are too broke to cough up $25 yet some how they always find money for another case of ammo @ $300.00  or 10 more mags @ $15 each, etc.

Yea I don't like the NRA but they are fighting for my gun rights.  By the way all that junk mail you get they can write off against any income they make so it's a pointless argument.  They are going to spend the money anyway.

If your a gun owner and you don't belong to some RKBA group pack your shit and get off this site would be my rule.  Your just as bad as a DU troll.

I am proud to be in the NRA.  I joined up when the NRA fought for people, after the Katrina gun grabbing.  Even though I live in a state that is considered a lost cause (IL) it can still be won if I, and others like me, support lobby groups that fight for us as a group.

You + Others (form lobby groups) that influence politicians, that form legislation = your rights being upheld/protected/won.

Membership is actually down from 4.0 to 3.8 million.

Probably a combination of moronic Fudds and moronic EBR owners, both departing because the NRA is too hard or soft on the gun issue.
