SALT LAKE CITY –– The Utah Highway Patrol has found a man wanted in connection with a deadly crash on Interstate 80 over the weekend.

A woman watching news coverage of Saturday's crash thought the vague description of the white pickup wanted in connection with it was familiar enough that she confronted her father. He confirmed he was at the scene and the woman called police, UHP troopers said.

The man came in for questioning, UHP Sgt. Jeff Nigbur said Monday. He would only identify the man as in his 60s and from Salt Lake City.

"He basically advised us he was in the area, that he was involved. He saw the dust cloud, saw the explosion, all that stuff," Nigbur said. "He did give us a reason as to why he left the scene."

Nigbur said the man claimed he just kept driving. The UHP refused to divulge the reason the man gave for not stopping.

"There's never a good reason, I think, when you leave an injury crash or a fatal crash," Nigbur said.

The man did claim the Dodge pickup being driven by Mark Nielson of Magna came upon him very quickly on I-80. At the scene, troopers were trying to determine if the white pickup cut off Nielsen's Dodge. The UHP is looking to witnesses to corroborate the man's statement as well as place his vehicle at the scene.

The UHP said Nielsen's Dodge crossed I-80 near the Salt Lake-Tooele County line and slammed head-on with a Federal Express semi hauling three trailers.

The crash caused an explosion. The FedEx truck was carrying ammunition and while rounds went off, the entire freeway was shut down.

The man questioned in this case was not placed under arrest. The UHP said they will wrap up the investigation and forward it to the Tooele County Attorney for any possible charges.

Considering price and availability of ammo these days, that is worse than alcohol abuse!

Poor guy. The driver of the Dodge died upon impact, and was burned beyond recognition. The other fellow is in critical condition.

Fiery Crash Kills One on Interstate 80
Last Update: 6/13 10:04 pm

Firefighters extinguish blaze in FedEx Semi filled with ammuntion. (Brian Bennett) One person is dead, another is in critical condition tonight after a fiery accident on Interstate 80.

Utah Highway Patrol Troopers say a Dodge Dakota traveling east near the Salt Lake County Tooele County line crossed through the center median and slammed head-on into a Fed-X semi truck.

Both vehicles burst into flames. The 3-trailer semi was loaded with ammunition, which started to go off as the fire spread.

"The big problem right now is the ammunition is still going off," said Nigbur, "it's still pretty hot."

Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the second and third cabs.

The man driving the Dakota, identified as Mark Nielson of Magna, died on scene.

The semi truck driver was flown to the hospital in critical condition.

Officials say Nielson was cut off by another vehicle, possibly a cream, older model pick-up truck, which left the scene.

The crash shut down both directions of the Interstate.

Officials have been turning cars around. Troopers are asking drivers to avoid I80 if they can or use an alternate route through Utah County.

So, is it common in other areas of the country to have a 3-trailer semi?

Just what we needed, something else to raise ammo prices. In reality it was probably just a small box of nines.

UPS does it all the time too.

It's illegal on some roads or states.( I'm not sure exactly)

That is a very familiar piece of road. I am from Tooele and traveled that section nearly every day. On the right is the Great Salt Lake and the left is the Oquirrh Mountains. I-80 squeezes past the point of the mountain range just there.

It's OK, it was just 9mm. If it was .45 there would have been statewide carnage.
