new production Ruger Mini-14

considering I already have five ARs, the mags for these ain't cheap at all, and that an AR will out shoot it every day of the week, plus that for $725 I could buy a S&W M&P Sport and about 200rds of ammo

I have always loved the idea of one, but could just never bring myself to get one.

Then why bother asking? You've already decided.

The newer ones are supposed to be more accurate than the early ones.

You had me until you mentioned 725 bucks. You can get one of the newer ones with flash suppressors, you know. But still, for 725 bucks...that's crazy.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 5:53:13 PM EST
I've got one, spousal unit and female offspring prefer the action over the AR..easier to clear, evaluate issues etc..they're shooting is
usually under 50 yards and they're accurate enough..
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 5:54:29 PM EST
They are overpriced, but they are built pretty solid.

I think they should be 500-ish for what you get.

Not much left for those of us who like the .223 to hunt with behind the lines.

They're fun to shoot. I gave one and a box full of factory mags to my brother because he was down on his luck and had no rifle at all and couldn't save any cash for one. He's having a blast with it. I'd buy another one if I were in the market for another semi-auto.

If it's a money issue, no one here can help you decide that. If it's just a "should I or shouldn't I" issue, that depends on how much you want one. I have guns I have absolutely no use for. I didn't buy them because I need them for a certain task (those roles are already taken care of), I bought them because I wanted them. I have no regrets. I like them because it's fun to have more toys, and more stuff to shoot. And I can always sell them if I ever decide I no longer want them.

If money isn't an issue, get that toy you've always wanted.

Buds has them for $657 with free shipping! You know you want it!

I think the Walmart near me has one with a wood stock for about the same $$.

You can order them at Walmarts that sell guns too.

Ask to thumb through the special order catalog at the sporting goods checkout.

In my limited experience with Mini's the only real thing they have going for them is that they look cool.

Does nobody make a decently accurate aftermarket barrel for the Mini 14?

$725??? Maybe I should sell mine. I only bought it cause my daughters would shoot that and not my ARs cause of course the ARs look all evil and stuff..... Think I paid around 350 for mine.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 6:18:06 PM EST
They're pretty cool I guess but I'm a bit soured by them. My buddy had a Mini-30 which always had feeding problems.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 6:18:29 PM EST
I would never buy one. That being said, if you want one, get one.

Simple answer is YES, that said I begged anyone in my family that would listen to me in 1985 to buy me a Ruger Ranch Rifle
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 6:34:54 PM EST
To me anyway, the next ban is around just the corner and only a matter of time. So if you want it buy it while you can...you live once, if you can afford why not? If you don't like it you can always sell it. I've never been a huge fan but they are a kick to shoot, more fun and handle better than an AR, plus they don't have that Evil black rifle look to them that freaks the non-shooting citizens out. I've carried one on quite a few backpacking trips and passed it off as a .22 lr which seems to be acceptable to the liberal tree hugger types I have ran into.

Always wanted a Mini when I was younger.

Bought a stainless Mini-30.

Tricked it out and polished it all up.

Lots of fun with inexpensive Russian steel cased 7.62X39, but a broken firing pin would have meant a trip to the factory, and I seriously doubt they'd touch it modified like that, so I would have been SOL.

Sold it for cash towards an accurate AR.

No regrets.

Link Posted: 10/4/2014 6:38:57 PM EST
It offers nothing over an AR-15
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 7:00:11 PM EST
Mine sits in the safe between the AR and the AK. Go to the Armory tab and look at the Ruger section for real info.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 7:32:12 PM EST
Mine was 350. Anyone would be foolish to spend more than 400 for one now, when you can put a kit together in the $550 range and have an AR.

The mini is great in ban states though.

Link Posted: 10/4/2014 7:37:38 PM EST
Dont believe everything you read on the internet there Beamy. You have "heard" an AR will out shoot it any day of the week. Go find out for yourself.

I have mine from the late 70's, it has not seen the light of day for more than 20 years, but somebody in my will can miss a barn with it if they so desire.

Get one, you might like it.

Doesn't do anything for me, but if it's what you want, go for it. I'd rather have an AR, or an M14, or an M1 carbine.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:31:56 PM EST
I want one too OP, but until they halve the price of the gun and the mags it would be a waste of money.

That's a mag issue. The procedure for finding functional mini-30 mags is this:

1. Buy 5 magazines.
2. find the one that works flawlessly.
3. Sell the other 4 mags, buy another group of 5 mags.
4. Repeat steps 1-4 until desired amount of mags are acquired.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:41:01 PM EST
I have one with 4 20 rounds mags and 2 5 rounds mags I am ready to put up for sale (not on this site) and I wouldn't buy it.

They were a great gun for 1976. After that there is no reason to buy one.

I'll sell mine for a profit in 3 days....
