If access doesn't open it you will need to try to reinstall Microsoft works

Works isn't available anymore I think.

Try opening them with Libreoffice. I've converted a variety of old formats (works, WordPerfect) to Word with it. Seems to support a lot of old/oddball/obsolete file formats.
