I prefer all the holes to be touching, or just one ragged hole.[rolleyes]
That group sucks!! Just kidding, it is good. You didn't give us any info though. Rifle, scope (if one was used), cartridge and projectile, temperature, and wind velocity. A 3" group in a 20 mph cross wind is damn good, but on a calm day it sucks. Get it? To measure the group, take a ruler and measure from the CENTERS of the 2 holes that are the farthest apart. |

The rifle is:
Bone stock Remington 700 Varmit Syn. Stainless Fluted with PSS stock. Scope is a 4.5x14x40 (1" tube)mildot. leupold quick release mounts. Ammo is 168 Federali Gold medal match. Shot in the spring about 80 degrees F . Little or no wind. That is a five shot group shot prone w/ harris swivel bipod. Hard to see the Fifth shot , but it is in the right hand side upper hole. I like them to touch too. Cold bore shot was the lowest one. What would the measurment of the group be? Half inch? 3/8"? |

My worn out calipers show a dimes diameter to
be about .702". Since the dime completely covers all 5 shots, the biggest the group could possibly be, center to center is .394". Good shooting. [beer] edited because I can't tell a dime from a quarter. What a dumb ass!!! Anyhow, that puts your ctr to ctr group size at a max of around .632" Still not bad, but not quite as good as .394". |

Another way to measure your group is, take the two farthest edges and subtract the diameter of the bullet. That way you won't have to guesstimate where the centers of the holes are.
My guess from the picture is .45" to .5"... Good Group! Next time tape the quarter to the target and post the donut. |

One 5-shot group does not an accurate rifle make.
Shoot 10-shot groups, and give an average group size across 10 groups, and then you know what kind of repeatable accuracy the gun/ammo/rifleman combo is good for. Not that the group depicted is not great... -Troy |

Darn Jew boy, you are up to over 1K posts. Slow down son. I taught myself to shoot a rifle. I still have a long way to go. All I did was read the Army sniper manual. Alot of good info in there.
If I practiced more I think I would be able to cut the group down some. I use my fist as a rear stock rest to move the site up and down. I need to move to a small handheld sandbag for more stability. I guess I will look into buying a trigger. What is a good one to buy? I can't stand the stainless finish on this rifle and plan to send it off for a good moly resin coat. Later. |

I was about to sight in my buddys rifle when a dragonfly landed on the target and he said "shoot the dragonfly!" as you can see, the scope was way off on the first 2 shots. Well, actually FrankS, I cheated. Thats the last group I shot using book load of 25.6gr of RE-15 with a CCI BR 4 with SMK 69gr mollied.
The other groups didn't fare so well(up to 3/4" @200). I still need to go out and try that load again to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I know that some people don't want to hear this, but these were necksized, neckturned and weighed cases. 5 shots avg 2847fps, SD-6.1, ES-14. Bullets seated into the lands, and hand fed. Will be interesting to see what happens next time I get out. WORK UP YOUR LOADS, EVERY BARREL IS DIFFERENT. Kens |

Here's what my Remington 700 VS in .308 did during break-in at about 75 rounds. This is a five shot group immediately after cleaning the bore with Butch's Bore Shine and treating it with Sweet's 7.62. The loads were a Sierra 150 BTSP Game King atop 38.3 grains of AA-2460 in a W-W case with a Remington 9 1/2 primer. This rifle is also unmodified with only the addition of a standard Leupold Vari-XIII 4.5x14 with a sunshade in Leupold two piece mounts. Group measures 0.739" center to center.
