It was shot with a 308 rifle @ 100 yds. Let me know. I am no expert on measuring group sizes and it appears to be better than an inch.

I prefer all the holes to be touching, or just one ragged hole.[rolleyes]

That group sucks!!

Just kidding, it is good.  You didn't give us any info though.  Rifle, scope (if one was used), cartridge and projectile, temperature, and wind velocity.  A 3" group in a 20 mph cross wind is damn good, but on a calm day it sucks.  Get it?

To measure the group, take a ruler and measure from the CENTERS of the 2 holes that are the farthest apart.

If you were shooting at flies.  I think two of them might of gotten away.

The rifle is:
Bone stock Remington 700 Varmit Syn. Stainless Fluted with PSS stock. Scope is a 4.5x14x40 (1" tube)mildot. leupold quick release mounts. Ammo is 168 Federali Gold medal match. Shot in the spring about 80 degrees F . Little or no wind. That is a five shot group shot prone w/ harris swivel bipod. Hard to see the Fifth shot , but it is in the right hand side upper hole. I like them to touch too. Cold bore shot was the lowest one.

What would the measurment of the group be? Half inch? 3/8"?

My worn out calipers show a dimes diameter to
be about .702".  Since the dime completely covers all 5 shots, the biggest the group could
possibly be, center to center is .394".  Good
shooting.

[beer]

edited because I can't tell a dime from a
quarter.  What a dumb ass!!!  Anyhow, that
puts your ctr to ctr group size at a max of
around .632" Still not bad, but not quite as
good as .394".

Bone stock? If you get a good trigger you will
probably cut that group in half[smoke]

seriously though, very nice shooting.

Another way to measure your group is, take the two farthest edges and subtract the diameter of the bullet. That way you won't have to guesstimate where the centers of the holes are.

My guess from the picture is .45" to .5"... Good Group!

Next time tape the quarter to the target and post the donut.

Winchester Model 70 in 7mm Mag.  Mcmillen stock, Shilen select match grade barrel, and Leupold glass.  BTW just starting to work up a load for this gun, this was the last 3 shot group of the first 25 rounds fired from this rifle. Shot at 100 yds.

Darn Jew boy, you are up to over 1K posts. Slow down son. I taught myself to shoot a rifle. I still have a long way to go. All I did was read the Army sniper manual. Alot of good info in there.

If I practiced more I think I would be able to cut the group down some. I use my fist as a rear stock rest to move the site up and down. I need to move to a small handheld sandbag for more stability. I guess I will look into buying a trigger.

What is a good one to buy? I can't stand the stainless finish on this rifle and plan to send it off for a good moly resin coat. Later.

No!  Bad Group! COME!  Group, COME!!!  COME!!!!!!!!

Oh, sorry, I'm just used to yelling at my buddies crappy chukar dog.  Who names a shorthair Group, anyway, and then forgets to train it. :-)

Nice shooting.  I want to see your offhand groups after you get used to the rifle.  Then we'll know if you can hit that 'chuck at 300 yds. as you're changing shooting spots.

SQUID,

"BTW 3 shot groups DON'T COUNT! They must be 5 shots",

I beg to differ.

In Sinclair International's PRECISION SHOOTING AND RELOADING, 10th Edition, Bill Gravatt & Fred Sinclair.Page 79 under the heading of LOAD TESTING "Fire two (2) three shot groups with each different load, and measure the group with your calipers....... Must be sufficient for these guys.

Send me the title of your book on reloading and precision shooting and you can be an expert too!

Negative Sukebe, but my twin brother was a jarhead (once a jarhead always one I guess).  I did my time with Uncle Sams Army.  He was at Pendelton, Japan, and Cherry Point.  BTW, he told me that a SQUID was a lower form of MARINE life!!! ( he is also dmuldrew!!!)

The Book is "Squids' Squibs and KaBooms #256"
It says that 2, 3 shot groups = 6 shots. Lets all stay friends and keep up the good work! BTW my groups are smaller then yours!!! [moon]hehehahahehehhaha [:P]

I think I may have served with your brother at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan back in 85, I was there from 83-85. I worked in the GSE shop at H&MS-12 with a guy named Dan Muldrew. I don't recall him mentioning a twin brother but it was a long time ago. Could he be one in the same?

dmuldrew:
Looks like your starting load is damn near
right on the rifle's sweet spot.  Please share
your case/bullet/powder/primer/OAL with us.  We
may have some other 7mm Mag shooters who could
benefit from your load.  (Provided it's not
at insane pressure levels!  If it is, keep it
as your little secret!!)

BTW - excellent shooting.  [beer]

Well, actually FrankS, I cheated. Thats the last group I shot using book load of 25.6gr of RE-15 with a CCI BR 4 with SMK 69gr mollied.
The other groups didn't fare so well(up to 3/4" @200). I still need to go out and try that load again to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I know that some people don't want to hear this, but these were necksized, neckturned and weighed cases. 5 shots avg 2847fps, SD-6.1, ES-14. Bullets seated into the lands, and hand fed. Will be interesting to see what happens next time I get out. WORK UP YOUR LOADS, EVERY BARREL IS DIFFERENT.

Here's what my Remington 700 VS in .308 did during break-in at about 75 rounds. This is a five shot group immediately after cleaning the bore with Butch's Bore Shine and treating it with Sweet's 7.62. The loads were a Sierra 150 BTSP Game King atop 38.3 grains of AA-2460 in a W-W case with a Remington 9 1/2 primer. This rifle is also unmodified with only the addition of a standard Leupold Vari-XIII 4.5x14 with a sunshade in Leupold two piece mounts. Group measures 0.739" center to center.
