Gun registry protester arrested
[space] Canadian Press Ottawa — One gun-owning protester was arrested and several others tried unsuccessfully to draw police charges as they flouted Canada's firearms legislation at a New Year's Day protest on Parliament Hill. Jim Turnbull, head of the Canadian Unregistered Firearms Owners Association, was arrested for handling a receiver — an unloaded part of a handgun. To chants of "shame" from some 150 protesters huddled near the Centennial Flame, RCMP escorted Mr. Turnbull, 70, to a police car, searched him and drove him away. Six other members of the group who handled the receiver were not arrested. Mr. Turnbull, a retired auctioneer from Jarvie, Alta., said earlier in the day he hoped he would be arrested. An RCMP spokesman said Mr. Turnbull was arrested for having a firearm at a public gathering, not for possessing an unregistered weapon under the 1995 Firearms Act. Protesters called it a minor victory. "To me it means that the RCMP realize quite clearly that the Firearms Act is a paper tiger that signifies nothing and it's not worth arresting me today standing here, telling you that I own firearms without a licence," said Ed Hudson, a member of the association from Saskatoon who brought the receiver onto Parliament Hill. "The RCMP realizes that it does not make the citizens of Canada safer to arrest me and the fact that they are leaving me alone makes the point that I want to make: the firearms act is a toothless paper tiger." Earlier, Mr. Turnbull and some eight gun enthusiasts and members of his association burned their gun registration certificates and a copy of Bill C-68, the Firearms Act, vowing never to register their weapons. Their protest drew strong criticism from other citizens who travelled from as far as Chatham, Ont., to say they believed in gun control as a way of making Canada safer. Under the act, all Canadians were required to register or declare their intent to register by midnight Tuesday night. Mr. Turnbull's group placed a copy of their organization's declaration in front of the centre doors to the Parliament buildings. It states, among other things, their intention not to register and calls the law a "colossal waste" and a violation of their Charter rights and freedoms. Paul Marsh, an RCMP spokesman, said he would not speculate on whether Mr. Turnbull would have been arrested had his guns been registered. "He was arrested only for carrying a weapon while attending a public meeting," he said. As for the others who held the receiver, "they've been directed to identify themselves at the police office if they feel that there's still a case for them to be arrested." [blue]Way to go Mr. Turnbull. Buy that man a cigar!![/blue] |

150?!?!?
WTF happened? They were supposed to have like a million, I thought. And everyone was supposed to be packing, I thought. One PIECE of one firearm? Sad that the other Canuck gun-owners let us down..... BTW, it is illegal to TOUCH a piece of metal in Canada? Scott |

Here, here! The fight for freedom doesn't falter, nor will it fail!

Geez, you'd think there would be just one geezer like him in California. That's pathetic when we get shown up by a citizen of a socialist country like Canada.

It'll be the same way here. A bunch of armchair yahoos will say they're in support and vow (on the internet anyway) that they'll be there. But when the SHTF and they actually have to risk arrest and prosecution for their beliefs..........3-4 will show up, and be hounded by the crowd of 5000 anti's that did bother to show up. Then they'll be arrested and that will be that.
I'll never register, I'll never turn my weapons in. Think I'm a pussy? Ever hear of the Devil's advocate? WILL YOU BE THERE? Or does your job and cable T.V. come before your inalienable rights. I know I'll be there. When it comes time to storm Washington D.C. with weapons displayed, I will be there. If you wont, and you know if you wont, SHUT THE HELL UP. |

Here is a thought for all the Canadians here... Any of you have any problems with the dumbass webiste for registering?
I have an old form (the green one) pistol that has to be reregistered I am told, if I mail in the papers they say it will cost me money, or free on the website.... Not mailing them in because I had to pay to register the thing originally anyways, and the website was not letting me in last night...... of course the only unregistered weapon I own is that handgun now I guess [;D] The registry is going to fail [:D] |

i look at it this way:
when it happens, if i get arrested, what happens free meals, room and board, cable tv, law library, etc.etc.etc. if i dont get arrested, i still goto work every fucking day and work for 10 hrs to get 5 hrs pay, (the rest going to uncle sam) i still will own firearms, i will continue to be the oppressed citizen i am now. only i will be a criminal in the eyes of the feds. i almost want them to arrest me. thats a sad state of affairs. when the time comes, nothing will change for me. |

Yeah...I won't lie, odds are I probably won't be there. But, I won't register my guns, and I will never surrender them. I might not march in Washington, but I sure as hell won't comply.

This should be an indicator of what you can expect from your fellow brothers-in-arms when the time comes in America.
The first are always the bravest, but are seldom recognized until much later. |

Gentlemen, you are laboring under the miconception that the politicans actually CARE what the people think. If I go to DC, it will be locked & loaded. If you go to DC with an unloaded weapon, you are a fool. Ops

I'm not sure why Mr. turnbull was arrested and no one else was. The piece of metal he had was a receiver which..if it has a serial number is considered a firearm. [rolleyes]
There are many more "subtle" protests going on. I don't want to elaborate as it would let the cat out of the bag. [;)] There is a business man from my province who publicly stated in the media that he will not register his long guns. His brother is a police officer in the same town! He is prepared to be arrested, possibly by his brother. What saddens me is that Canadians still support the liberals knowing full well they are wasting millions of our tax dollars on this white elephant while health care, education and infrastructure continue to be under funded. |

Striker, am I hearing the possibility of a brother-against-brother civil disorder issue here?
Could Canada be ripe for its first civil war? [:D] Je ne parle pais Francais. |

Well of course he was. Can't have any dissenters running around confusing the people with the truth. |

When I ran that boycott, (see my "user info", of an Oregon city, part of it was an organized "picket" with signs scheduled for 2 Saturdays in a row. First Saturday comes, I optimistically had material for 100 signs. At the peak of the demonstration, I counted 35 people, (including kids), and 1 dog,(wearing a billboard). We made it look like more of us by carrying 2 signs each. Fortunatly, only 1 anti protestor showed up across the street. As a strategic move, I supplied him with the material, and he made up his own anti sign. It made us look better! I canceled the demonstration for the following week...........I was embarrassed. We DID wind up victorious however.... |

Where in DC is the march going to be held July 4th, 2003? I hope everyone knows that between 500,000 and 750,000 people showup every year for the fireworks display around the Washington Monument.

When the time comes 99.99% of your "brothers in arms" are going to turn tail to run at least and turn you in to save their own asses at worst. May be you all will have better luck, but I highly doubt it. |

Haha, a march? Everybody and there mother marches on DC. One week it's pregnant travestites demanding benefits under SSI to the Million Man March. Marches, parades, everyday something happens in DC. If you think a bunch of "gun owners" are going to attract more than just a raised eyebrow and a small grunt of apathy in Washington DC you're smoking the crazy shit.
Why would the media give you coverage? To promote the 2nd? Hah, most of you think the media itself is the commie army portrayed in Red Dawn. The only reminder of this march in a few years will be the reciept for the classified ad taken out for advertisement. |
