Bulletfest-III --- The Whitewater Trip As most of you are aware, I organized a whitewater trip on the "Lower Yough River" (pronounced Yok) in southern Pennsylvania. This trip ended up only being 4 of us (Urodoji, MedCop, a close friend who happens to be the river photographer, and myself), but was an absolute blast... especially since neither Urodoji or MedCop had ever been on whitewater before! [}:D] ............................................... To begin our trip, we left my house in Illinois right at 8:30pm and figured we would go for an all nighter, so as to arrive at the river in time for breakfast... We pulled into Ohiopyle State Park at 9:30am, thus making our 13 hour drive in exactly 12 hours... including the numerous stops we made along the way, for one reason or another. We went directly to the raft rental shop, where I worked years ago, and got Urodoji and MedCop hooked up with a couple of duckies (inflatable kayaks), then went to my buddies photo-lab to get our plans set for the day. When we arrived at Greg's lab, he poiinted to a really nice cabin across the street from his place, and informed us that he made arrangements for us to stay there, rather than having to pitch a tent in the campground... This was just too freakin cool, especially since we wanted to spend a lot of time hanging with him (Greg turkey hunts w/ an Armalite M15). Okay, so we get situated in our cabin, get changed for the river, get our drinks mixed (a couple of quarts of Capt. Morgan & Coke), get the duckies, run the shuttle, and hit the water. Urodoji immediately climbs in his duckie, and shrieks out that water is too cold, and "The Boyz" just shriveled up... MedCop hopped in the river, and confirmed Urodoji's statments, while Greg and I laughed at these guys for being candy asses. BTW: At 63 degrees, It is really cold until you acclimate to it! [}:D] We paddeled around the put-in for a few, then headed down river, while Greg gave the guys excellant paddeling instructions, pointed out how to "read" whitewater, and showed them the proper lines to run... Even though I know whitewater as well as I do, I felt a lot better w/ Greg along, since I had not been on a river in 5 years! The first rapid had the guys a little warry, but they both aced it like thay were pros. I pretty much took point, and led the trip. The 2nd and best rapid (Cucumber) is where the river photos are taken. I ran a dry line, and then MedCop followed me through, but Greg's employee didn't take MedCop's picture... Greg then came through the rapid and gave her holy hell for not shooting us, so MedCop carried his duckie back up the side of the river (over boulders), and ran it again. This was a perfect line! In between all of this, Urodoji came busting ass down the line, for a perfect run himself, although he wasn't quite sure if he was going to live or die on this day... He just kept saying that if he drowns, his Mom is gonna be really pissed!

Excellent pics. If you would have decided to do this earlier and given me more time, we'd have been up for kayaks. She loves whitewater.

That last blurred image is of MedCop... I'm not pictured in any of these, for obvious reasons, since I was behind the lens.

Does Urodoji remind anyone else of a young John Belushi? Wow that looks like fun on the river! Later IAJack

I should add that my buddy, Greg, gave Urodoji and MedCop a slew of 8x10's that were taken of them, while running Cucumber... We even got a great group shot of the 4 of us (I'll add it this evening, since it needs to be scanned). Greg wouldn't except a dime for any of these photos, which normally sell for $15 each... Between the photos, the cabin, and taking time to paddle with us, Greg treated us like royalty for a couple of days. I worked for him from 87-89, and he is a trip to be around! This was actually only the 2nd time I have ever had the pleasure of paddling with him, since he typically refuses to take a day off during rafting season. The last time was about 6 years ago, on the Cheat River, for a high water (5.5' on the river guage ~ 3.25' is considered average) party trip!

The rapids were AWESOME! I was unsure at first if a short fat narc could manage it. Heck, it was work at times, but the fun factor was a five star rating! Tim's friend really hooked us up and was a great guy to hang with. Can't wait to hit the white water again! medcop
