I went fishing at my parent's place today.  They have three ponds, totaling about 13-16 acres of water.  A really sweet spot to fish!

I started the day having pretty good luck, caught 4-5 Bass and a few Crappie.  I decided to move over to "the big pond" and try my luck in a corner of the pond that has produced some pretty big fish.  I cast out my 6" black worm a few times with no luck.  I moved down a few feet on the bank and tried again, getting a big snag.  Well, this snag starts swimming!  I fought this thing for about 7-8 minutes and it never showed itself the whole time.  I thought I had a huge Carp or Catfish.  When I finally got it to shore, it was a HUGE Snapping Turtle!!!  It was too big for me to get out of the water.  He must have gone about 25 lbs or so, maybe more.  I took my Leatherman PST II and reached down off the bank and got a hold on the hook, then the sonofabitch grabbed my fucking pliers while breaking my line and disappeared!!!!!  Man was I pissed!  They were nearly new!  I'm going to go back with a rake tomorrow and see if he dropped them right there at the bank.

Next time I'll just cut the line.

I had my Beretta on my side (snakes abound there!) but my 7 yr old daughter was standing next to me.  Had she not been there, I may have emptied the mag!

My dad once did in a big snapper with a .30/06. Blew it's head clear off. He said the meat was all discolored and unappealing although his sister scarfed it down.

I'm still trying to read past your account of getting your six-inch black worm snagged.

Clearly he thought you were with the UN and there to "help" him in his time of need.

Next time, leave the helmet at home!

I used to kill them often because I thought they dined on our fish population.  I have since read that they are not really harmful, so I leave them alone.

Now the Muskrats.......[}:D]

Snapper is great eating, the best, maybe tied with alligator tail meat.

My buddy and I had some bass on a stringer hanging off the side of our boat. Something kept pulling on the stringer pretty hard. So we look over the side and there where two snapping turtles about the size of a Rubbermaid trash can lid. They where huge!! We wanted to catch them but they bent our net and ended up getting away. Biggest turtles i've ever seen.

I've caught several big snappers out of ponds and creeks in my life. I've never even thought about trying to get my hook back, I just cut the line. I guess I've just got more hooks than you do. [:D]

I can't remember how it came to be, but my dad caught this snapper at his lake in Wisconsin.  He shot it in the head with a .38 and dumped it back by his garage.  The thing was still crawling around the next day.  Took forever to die.  Tough little sucker.

well, in the spirit of this thread, i will share a funny and unfortunate fishing story of mine from last week (and i wish this was just a "fishin' story"

me and a buddy had been fishing all day. a little river fishin, little bass, little walleye trolling. it is about 7pm and we are fishing in a canoe on a small lake. this lake is full of fish. thier is about a foot of goose shit lining the bottom of the whole body of water. thier are also rumors about some waste runoff in this water. its all ok because i dont keep bass anyway. well were fishing along our of or little boat. i go to change lures and KERPLUNK my CRKT m16 goes in about 6.5 feet of water. long story short: went home really cold without my knife and took a very detailed shower

i aint lying about that "foot of shit at bottem of lake" thing either
