OMG!!!!! So how much does a chopper go for these days?
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 7:48:49 PM EDT
Hahahahahaha!!!!
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 7:55:14 PM EDT
What was the pilot thinking? My guess is: 'Oh Shit!!!!' Maybe, 'FUCK!!!'
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 8:05:15 PM EDT
Shit! Did the crew survive??

What an idiot. It is hard to believe anyone who would do that could have managed to get a helicopter rating in the first place. Edited to add that "Oh Shit" and "Fuck" where probably the last two things he was thinking.

Thats kinda scary.....

Really? Never heard of companies that take skiiers off to a remote mountain of virgin powder, drop em' off at the top and pick em' up at the bottom? I'm just amazed these guys had a helicopter on hand to tow that boat but not another motorboat.
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 8:35:36 PM EDT
....You have GOT to be shitting me. I'm sitting here trying to think of a suitable comment for that, and for once, I'm not succeeding. The depths of that particular type of stupidity are too deep even for me to fathom. Man, that is WEAK. CJ

Two words sum it up: DUMB ASS
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 8:55:09 PM EDT
DAMN! Can't get the video to open. Some of our helicopter pilots have done a good amount of heli skiing, here and in NZ. To a man they hate it. Piss Poor visibility, on snow. That is tolerable, but the skiers are the worst part of it. They often try to contest the judgement of the pilot and can get rude or aggressive if the pilot is leery of landing somewhere unsafe. It is a 200 dollar trip or so, and the customers of course want every cent of satisfaction they can get.

H46 Rule of Life: Never hook anything to your helicopter that you can not immediately disconnect in case of emergency.
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 9:22:33 PM EDT
oops
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 9:41:10 PM EDT
Was he trying to tow that with the line from the cabin? Dumb fucker. Looks like the drag from the boat overcame the abilty of the tail rotor to compensate and keep the aircraft heading straight as he accelerated. The helo got yanked sideways (both in roll and yaw) and it looks like he ran out of lift, control authority and altitude all at about the same time. Stupid son of a bitch. A JetRanger is around 500 to 750 thousand these days. The insurance company is probably going to say “fuck you” to the owner based on the pilots blatant negligence.

What is really "funny" is watching pilots "bounce" loads that are too heavy to pick up to move them from one place to the next. Give it power, go into the air several feet and a few feet ahead, and repeat as necessary... [:)] or hearing about them accidentally hitting that release button and dropping a week's worth of groceries to the ground.

I think he got his smart pills mixed up with the stupid pills. And took a double dose. A couple years ago we had a guy put one of the news Jet Ranger's into the ground while sidelining harvesting christmas trees, got a little carried away and didn't slow down enough before he dropped the load and the cable flipped, getting wrapped in the rotor, things kinda went downhill from there.

I've been in one "fender bender" with a student and one that would have been in any aircraft besides the Grumman we flying and one where a stall demonstration by a student began to depart from controlled flight. Well, the last one wasn’t a “beginning to”. It went from stall to snapping over and wrapping up for the first turn of a spin in a blink of an eye. First time for both of us in a new aircraft that turned out to be just a bit out of rig. Each time I only had time to say "SHIT!" before my hands, feet and brain were fully engaged with the problem at hand. There wasn’t time or brain cells available beyond that one utterance.

On top of all that genius, the ship ditched on the wrong side, forcing the transmission into the passenger cabin normally. He lost control and had no choice at that point. A slow steady pull may have worked but it looks like the jerk jerked.

Holy crap... is that thing flying, or crashing? If the pilot of the helo from the video died, he should definitely be nominated for a Darwin Award.
Link Posted: 11/25/2003 2:58:45 PM EDT
It's flying. Testing at Columbia Helicopters for proof of concept. Towing a 60 ton sled over Arctic ice. Sometime in the mid-70s.

That's right: Two motors, two rotors - skids are for kids.
Link Posted: 11/25/2003 4:45:54 PM EDT
[shock] Good Lord!.... The pilot who pulled that sled must be completely nerveless and have balls of titanium. I'd like to see a side view so I can see what angle the chopper's at. CJ

Darwin has to eliminate helicopter pilots too!

"Hold my beer. Watch this!" I'm not sure who's got the bigger pair: the [s]Chinook[/s] [blue]helicopter[/blue] pilot or the guy that took the picture. Edited for incorrect identification.

It is not a Chinook. [:D] It is a KV-107, roughly the civilian version of the venerable H-46 Sea Knight. Note that the engines are interior to the airframe. The Chinook's are exterior. If the pitch angle wasn't so great you would see only 3 landing gear as opposed to 4 on the Chinook.

I beg your pardon, and stand corrected. Should have looked a bit closer. Thanks for the clarification, H46Driver.
