... My g/f and I were talking tonight about how she once visited the US Treasury (mint) in Philadelphia. A question arose that neither of us had the answer.

Ok, for part of the answer, look at this Wikipedia article on fiat currency.  Basically, increasing the number of bills in circulation causes inflation, so they have to keep track of how much is taken out of circulation by banks due to age and such.

My brother works for the treasury, and after about 15 years of school he is the one who decides how much money to print, how much to take out of circulation, etc....

its a numbers game, one I would rather stay out of...
