My oldest son made me a grandfather at 42 yesterday.
Aubrey Madelina I couldn't be more thrilled. But what are some alternative terms for "grandpa." I just don't know if it suits me. What do/did you call your GP? What do your kids call your dad? |
When we were young we called my grandfathers "Puppa"
When we got a little older we called them "Grandpa" Congrats by the way! |
"did" call him Paul Bob, he is with God and he was my best friend.
Paternal grandfather = Granpa
Maternal grandfather = PawPaw. Now, PawPaw has a whole bunch of great-grandkids now who all still call him PawPaw, so one uncle's grandkids call him 'Daddy Bill.' |
My paternal grandfather was Pa, my maternal grandfather was Pa (last name).
Man, I miss them. |
Sir... when speaking with him....Grandpa in general terms
ETA....Congrats |
"Pa Pa" (two words) right up until he passed this Easter.
(My wife swears we pronounce it Pow-pow) |
Dad's Parents = Grandma - Grandpa
Mother's Parent = Nanny (Her father died when I was 6 months old so I never really called him anything) |
Poppa, but when we got older it was shortened to Popps. I miss him to this day.
both my gandfathers where dead before I was born so I really can not answer this one

Grandpa suits you because you are and grandpa, get over it. Lighten up Francis |
Paternal is Granddad, he is an Optometrist and very formal. Doc by his peers.
Maternal told us to call him Guy. It was weird, but its what he wanted. I guess that was his nickname. I think I'd prefer Gramps when the times comes. Congrats on new rugrat in the family. |
Pop-pop
And my wife's family used it too, so it was easy for us. But when we have grand-kids I wanna be Papa Joe and she wants to be Mimi. I know, we're ghey. |
Grandpa. My kids call my dad Papa when they are young though.
Both of my natural grandfathers passed away too soon for me to have any real relationship with them –– one before I was born and one when I was still young.
But my wife's paternal grandfather, God bless that saint of a man, treated me like I was his own from the day we met until the day he died. I loved him dearly and really miss him. I called him "Granddaddy" like all of his "real" grandchildren did, and it fit him well. |
Maternal Grandfather was Peepaw
Paternal Grandfather was Grandpa |
Papa, best man I have ever known, man I miss him. Congrats on the new grand baby.
Never knew any of my grandparents
They all died before I was born |
"Grand-daddy"
Might be an Alabama/Florida thing, though. Dunno. |
When speaking to him, Grandpa.
When speaking about him, Grandfather. It's a term of respect, accept it and live up to it. |
Doesn't matter what you want to be called. THe kids will figure it out for themselves, and you just go with it!
I didn't know my maternal grandfather, or paternal grandfather. My paternal grandmother remarried before I was born, and I called him Grandaddy. And he treated my just like one of his own natural grandchildren. |

I did the following:
Maternal Grandfather - Poppy Fraternal Grandfather - Grandpa My kids: call my Dad - Grandpa my Stepdad - PaPa |
It must be a regional thing, because nobody I grew up with kept their 'kid' name for their grandparents into adulthood. It became Grandpa X, or Grandma Y. Most were instructed to change the name they used. It was another subtle signal of no longer being a kid...
The first time I ever saw adults calling their grandparents "Pawpaw" or "Memaw" was on arfcom. |
On dad's side was Grandpop
Mom's was Grandfather. Congrats Sharky! Edit-Grandma is my only living grandparent(dad's side.) When my grandmother remarried in 1996, he was Grandpa Olon(RIP Grandpa Olon). |
Father's father = Grandpop
Mother's father (much influence on my life) = Pop |
Maternal grandfather - Granddad
Paternal grandfather - Poppa Maternal grandmother - Granny Paternal grandmother - Nonnie |
Grandpa
served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Passed Dec 7, 2008, man i miss him |

Maternal grandfather - Ong Ngoai
Paternal grandfather - Ong Noi (Vietnamese) |
By the time she is old enough to talk, I believe by law she will be required to call you "Comrade."
never had any grand parents. But I would love to us grampa of gramps.
My only living grandfather, and the only one whom I've actually known, is Grandpa Bob.
