We need about 99 more of him. We can keep Paul and maybe a few others. But not too many. 87 more would be good.

From examining that douchebag activists blog, it appears that aside from freedom of speech, his gripe with the senator is allowing Australians to carry! Now I really like that guy

Notice how American Democrats have perverted the meaning of the word "liberal".
In America, most "liberals" are actually communists.

I suggest you go look into Australian politics before you attempt to equate their liberalism with that of the founding fathers.

A funny email doesn't make this guy Ronald Reagan, although I do applaud his speech writing skill.

Listen to his maiden speech to Parliament. It would be fair to equivocate them.

Yup, they've altered the meaning so much they had to change the definition in the dictionary.

If the choices are:

A.  Abortion is legal, and then all the other freedom goodness that he wants.

B.  Abortion is legal, and I'm still paying 18% of my income to the feds, having my emails read, and I can't buy a toilet that works.

I'll take 'A' every time.

I've tried to explain that concept to people when it comes to drug laws: Drug prohibitions will end, and drugs will be legal.  No one is going to stop it.  So you have two choices:  vote for the best candidate that will ensure the most liberty for you, let drugs become legal, and your kids wont do them anyway because you raise them right....  OR... Stay home on election day muttering about "purity" and let the other party destroy all your liberties, while drugs become legal anyway.

If I spend my entire life fighting for the cause of liberty, and I achieve a net increase in freedom for Americans, but abortion is still legal, I wont think my life wasted.

I think he's referring to choosing jail over serving in the Army for 2 years.

Not the part I meant.

At just past the 4 minute mark:
"I refused to register for national service."

That part, and the few sentences on both sides of it.

If I had missed it, I'd be applauding pretty much everything.  Since I heard it, I went back to it, listened to it a few times, and I'm not quite sure what to take from it.

He didn't choose jail.  He said:
"But for the election of the Whitland government, I would have either served 2 years in jail or in the army.  I refused to register for national service.  Being forced to serve in the army with the potential to be sent to Vietnam was a powerful education in excessive government power."

There were some other comments leading up to it, too.

Sorry.  I knew the abortion comment was near the beginning too, and since I figured it was the most contentious thing he said I just assumed that's what people would ask about.  My mistake.

To address your question: He elaborates on his reasoning later when he quotes William Pitt.  "Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

Conscription is a claim by the state of the necessity of military service to preserve the state.  Forced military service is slavery, and at absolute odds with liberty.  Though "service is the sacred duty of a free people," it must be voluntary service.
