Pretty much so. The differences are in the details.

Check out www.falfiles.com for more info.

In broad strokes, yes.

In details, sorta.

Different measurements, different accessories, different styles. Same basic type of rifle, though.

The L1A1 is an imperial-measurement (inches, feet, etc) FAL, adopted by the UK and it's commonwealth friends. The FAL is a metric-measurement (centimeters, meters, etc) rifle, adopted by pretty much everyone else...and almost adopted in the US.

Most of the parts interchange pretty easily.

+1

The FN FAL was Belgian-made and was built to metric measurements.
The L1A1 was made in Commonwealth countries and was built to standard (inch) measurements.

ETA: Ed beat me to it.

The metric FAL was widely manufactured throughout the noncommunist world, not just in Belgium.

i see, thanks
Not all FAL's are FNFAL's right? only the ones made by Fabrique National. kind of a dumb question but i always hear every FAL looking rifle called. "HEY THATS A FNFAL!"

I suppose GunWares just answered that question!

i wouldn't worry about it. It's about the same as calling a Bushmaster an AR-15. Technically, it's an XM-15 and not an AR-15, but everyone knows what you're talking about.
