Gun control report triggers call for tougher laws
The Coalition for Gun Control is calling for a total ban on semi-automatic handguns in Tasmania after the release of the auditor-general's report into gun control.

While the report found there has been a significant reduction in the number of gun-related injuries and crimes since the Firearms Act was introduced in 1996, it also made a number of recommendations.

They include a police review of licensing procedures and cooperation of the Mental Health Department in alerting authorities about potentially "at risk" patients.

Gun control lobbyist Roland Browne says the stricter gun laws are working, but they do not go far enough.

"People can still have access to military style semi-automatic handguns, high power with magazines carrying 10 rounds of ammunitions," he said.

"We don't want a situation where civilians are as well armed or better armed than the police force."

Tasmanian police have welcomed the auditor-general's report, which was tabled in Parliament yesterday.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jack Johnston says overall the auditor-general has been extremely positive about the approach taken by police in relation to the implementation of the Firearms Act.

Some of the recommendations include broadening the scope of random inspections to ensure safe storage of guns.

Deputy Commissioner Johnston says police will work towards achieving the best outcome.

"He's found some areas where we could improve and as an organisation of course we're always seeking to improve, and we'll take on board the observations that have been made and seek to address them," he said.

Flaws in Tassie gun laws
By John Briggs
May 25, 2005
From:
NINE years after the Port Arthur mass murder, Tasmanian police still can't properly assess the mental fitness of gun licence applicants.

That was one of several problems perceived by Auditor-General Mike Blake, whose special report on gun control since 1996 was tabled in Parliament yesterday.
Mr Blake's report said access to guns was now much tighter and the number of guns in the community had been greatly reduced.

Crime and hospital statistics also showed guns now figured much less often in violent crime and suicide.

Hospital admissions for gun injuries, particularly those caused by accidental shootings, had also dropped since the law changed.

However, the report said police did not appear to be able to meet the legislative requirement to assess the mental condition of licence applicants.

National Coalition for Gun Control chairman Roland Browne hailed the report as a vindication of the 1996 reforms on gun control, but said a madman could apply for a gun licence through any Service Tasmania office with police seemingly unable to intervene.

The Auditor-General made eight recommendations about police activities.

One was for more inspections to confirm owners' gun storage conditions.

Others concerned police follow-up and management of information about licence-holders and their guns.

Police Commissioner Richard McCreadie said the Department of Police and Public Safety would review the recommendations and consider ways in which effectiveness in identified areas could be increased.

Mr Browne said the report was timely, given that the State Government was reviewing the Firearms Act 1996 with a view to watering it down.

"Any plans by the Police Minister David Llewellyn to do away with any of the cornerstone requirements of the 1996 National Firearms Agreement should be abandoned," Mr Browne said.

And THAT, in a nutshell, is the basis of all the Socialist Gun Grabbers philosophy…

They FEAR the idea that the population may decide they have had enough of oppression and FEAR the idea that a population may possess the sort of firearms that would enable them to do something about it.

FACT: For Socialism to succeed the population must be disarmed.

You nailed it!

Edited to add: Mr Browne and his ilk supported the handgun agreement and now he is bitching about it?

He is whining about 38 Super 1911s and such allowed for ISPC?

I see it in action over here CRC,

We've lost our hi-power self loading rifles, ALL our handguns and now they have pump action and semi auto shotguns, large calibre bolt action rifles and all semi auto and pump .22 rifles in their sights to be banned also.

Within 5 years there is a good chance that all that will be legal in Britain will be break action 12 gauge shotguns and .22 single shot bolt action rifles kept at club armories… a Socialist paradise!

FiftyCalibre…

Your missing the point mate… the Gungrabers always lie and exagerate to put the fear of God into the sheepish masses so they can claim they are doing something 'to make them safe'…

From the "Gun Grabbers Guide"…

You never say its a semi automatic rifle, you call it a high powered military assault rifle…

You never say its a pistol, you call it a high powered military style pistol…

You never say its a semi auto shotgun, you say its a combat shotgun…

You never say its a bolt action rifle, you say its a materiel destruction rifle or sniper rifle…

You never say its a .22 rimfire handgun, you say it's the handgun that is the favorite choice of assissins…

You never say its a its a .357 revolver, you say its a .357 MAGNUM revolver, because MAGNUM makes it sound much more deadly to the sheep…

I am thinking that muzzle loading firearms may have slipped under the radar of the anti-gunners. This may be worth looking into as the primitive firearms are still effective for hunting and pest control.

The problem we have FiftyCalibre is that both Oz and Britain are Islands and are great 'test locations' for the Socialists Gun Grabbing experiments. You guys have still got hand guns, we still have semi auto shotguns and .22's… I think that will level out with the next set of 'gun grabs'. It will be bolt action .22's and double barrel shotguns for both of us before too long, mark my words.
