I just picked up a new Springfield 1911 Milspec and I'm looking for some self-defense ammo for it. I currently use Winchester Ranger-T in my 9mm and my .40 pistols. I like the stuff. Between the 230gr and the 230gr +P, what would you recommend? Any other ammo makes you would recommend? Thanks guys.

I'm using 230gr Federal Hydra-Shoks

The Winchester Ranger-Ts are one of the most potent rounds available for th .45. With a .45, +P isn't all that necessary.

Also good:
Speer Gold Dot
Remington Golden Saber

Whatever you pick, make sure to run a few boxes through to see if it functions properly. Just in case.......

I go with the cheap Wallmart Reminton 100 packs of JHP  for about $23. Not the best defensive ammo, but I can afford to practise with it.  Better that Ball though.

I hope you are just looking for suggestions, here is mine.

Get several boxes of different brands maybe some cheaper and some higher end like Gold Dots, HydraShoks etc...  Make sure anything you plan to use for self defense feeds very, very reliably.

This whole process I know. I'm happy with Ranger-T in my other firearms, just wondering on the opinions of it in .45 and what other people carry. Curiosity. And I know 1911s are finicky with JHP, so I agree, might be a good idea to get multiple brands.

9mm FMJ sabots

Speer Gold Dots.  You may also try buying a box of Speer, Win Ranger, Federal Hydra, etc. and see which one feeds 100% reliably.

Dont believe everything you hear or read.   My SA 1911s will feed ANY JHP you can stick in there including the old 200gr speer "flying ashtray" load.      If your 1911 wont feed something then yes you will need change ammo but you need to find out why it wont work like it should in the first place.    Even my bone stock springer GI has run 100% right out of the box.   I've fired LSWC, 185 and 200gr JHPs as well as my issued 230gr Ranger SXT JHP ammo.

Btw, I'm sure you can find some of the Ranger loads if you look hard enough

What's stopping you? That model is very affordable, and the GI WWII model is even MORE affordable.

This is my agency issued ammo for .45acp

I never shot a bad guy with one but it made short work of a doe a couple years back.
