trying to decide which to get a mod19 or 23 any thoughts? iwp carry

When the .40" came out in the early '90's, it was THE answer. More capacity than .45", much better terminal ballistics than the 9x19mm rounds of the day. Bullets have improved in 9x19mm over the last 25 years, and now meet the FBI protocol w/ less recoil, less flash, higher capacity, and lower practice cost.

9.
And IBMJBT. Edit- ok, not GD. Longer answer- if you aren't bothered by the recoil at all, .40 does offer a very marginal improvement in terminal performance. Ammo is more expensive than 9mm, but guns are slightly cheaper right now as demand is higher for 9mm guns. Me- I shoot the 9mm better, and appreciate the lower cost of the ammo. I say, get 9. |

Go price 9mm plinking ammo versus .40Cal plinking ammo and report back.
.40 Cal was hype/bullshit when it was introduced. Still is. When my LEO buddies want to try to keep up with me on speed/accuracy drills, they swap out their issued fo-tays for 9s. And they also carry the 9mm off duty. |
I've done 9mm, .40, and .45 and think 9mm with HST is just perfect

Regardless of hype, .40 does offer something. I still think they missed the boat by not loading heavier and slower, 200grn at 850-900fps. OP, I vote 19 also, quick on target, more rounds, cheap practice. |

This is arfcom the answer is always Glock 19. But I would also consider the Glock 17.
Honestly, see what you shoot and like better.
I have a 17, 19, and a 27. I shoot my 17 the best. |
I was hardcore .40 until last year. Now I'm 9mm.
So, get the G19. |

trying to decide which to get a mod19 or 23 any thoughts? iwp carry View Quote The answer is easy, get the M19. 9mm ammo is $9.50 per 100 on sale when purchased in bulk. It doesn't kick. It has greater capacity. The exact same size as the M23 so if you ever want a .40 your holster will fit. Buy night sights, either straight from Glock or aftermarket, it doesn't matter. The original plastic sights scream CHEAP. |

The only reason I used these bullets is that I was gifted several thousand once fired cases at the height of the 2008/2009 buying panic and the 180 grain bullets were impossible to find. It ended up being a pleasant surprise, instead of a stop gap emergency solution they became a standard load for me. Kind of reminds me of the .45acp, except they have a higher sectional density (deeper penetration). |

why not to get 40 and conversion barrel to 9? View Quote That is how my G22 is set up. .40 was always available, that was the reason I did it. I had a choice to run what was on the shelf .40 can do 9, but not the other way around. And the giveaway prices of some .40's allow you to get ... The conversion barrel, and a mag; plus the host gun for the about same $$$ I prefer 9, cause I liked it from my SMG days |
I would get the 40 and a conversion barrel.
Apparently the bullet technology that has advanced the 9mm so much doesn't apply to the 40. 9mm is the fad, for now. |
Have a couple 19's. Gave one to my son when he made Captain in the Army. Great guns that carry well and are easy to shoot well. Love the .40 in my .22's. Never cared for the .23.
See if you can rent the two and see which one you like best. |
I use my G19 pretty much exclusively now. If you're not already into .40 with ammo stacked up I'd go 9mm.
40 made a lot more sense when we had the mag ban. If you can only carry 10 rounds, carry the biggest 10 you can get. I don't know the extend to which your freedom has been stolen in CT, but I suspect there's mag capacity limits. Contrary to what Arfcom believes, the "better bullet design" that has improved 9mm has also been applied to 40 and 45. |
I've been shooting .40 S&W for 20 years and enjoy it. However, I still prefer plinking with 9mm.
I've also carried both calibers for self-defense and feel comfortable with either given the right load. |
9mm for sure!!! 40S&W sucks!!! I hate that caliber so much, haha. Now 10mm, that's something I can get behind ;) And of course classic 45acp is a great handgun caliber if you want to go larger. All my pistols are pretty much 9mm and 45acp. I have a 45 Super 1911 setup as well if I want something will a little more kick. But don't get me wrong it'll all get the job done. I think most prefer 9mm and 45acp though and for good reason.

I prefer the 19 over the 23
Get what you like, they are both excellent choices really. |

Hi!
Good question. What is your purpose for this purchase, and what is your physical and skill level? For me - I've carried a gun as a job requirement pretty much every day since 1988. Now I teach others occasionally how to do it. I study a *lot* more than I explain. First, you can't go wrong with almost any Glock pick. I started with .357 magnum (revolver), then 9mm semi, then .40 as soon as it came out, and about 1 JAN 2017, I will be back to 9mm. For me, the added controllability of the 9 coupled with a lot of positive real world results with current ammunition makes it a more reasonable choice for me than the .40. If you have a bigger upper body, good arm strength, and the time and ability to practice to stay current, I still recommend .40. But in my research, it's not a head and shoulders margin above 9mm, and neither 9 nor 40 are a huge step behind .45 anymore. All pistols are a compromise. But we are a long way from troops getting shit performance overseas with sandy beretta 92's loaded with ball. Now, I've always carried a full size at work, and a subcompact as a backup or when I just didn't want to screw with it off duty. I am toying with a 19 this time around. Again, lots of compromise in a system full of compromise. I don't think I lose enough between the 17 down to the 19 to warrant a 17. For me, time will tell. I did a shitty job of concealing a 22 with a firearm mounted light; I'm sure I'll do a teeny bit better with the 19 and light. lol Long story short, I don't think the 40 is bad. If you can handle it. I choose to run 9 and accept a different set of compromises. |

View Quote No, the .40" will always expand larger on average than a 9x19mm, and on average will be heavier, and can be expected to penetrate more deeply. But in the '90's, 9x19mm couldn't be counted on to expand reliably & penetrate @ least 12" - .40" could. Today, 9x19mm meets the FBI protocols for less cost, less recoil, etc, etc. Sure, .40" has gotten better - but it was already good enough when it started. |

Shoot them both and see what you like best. I have both, but if were to choose one, it would be the 19, for the reasons already enumerated here. In contrast to a rifle round which has a blast cavity that will cause damage to adjacent tissue, handgun rounds have to do their work by hitting something of critical importance, like vasculature or CNS, so shot placement is worth more to me than bullet diameter. Yeah, 40 will expand a little larger than 9, but for me, that tiny bit of increased expansion isn't worth it. Take a look at some of the studies of expansion to pick a good defensive round that expands nicely. In the end, it's your gun not mine. You've got to be comfortable carrying and shooting it.

Avoid .40 like the plague. I regret ever purchasing my 22 and 27 and would sell them both if 1) the market wasn't flooded with used .40s pushing prices down and 2) the 22 didn't have sentimental value. They're a package deal, so either keeping both or selling both. Right now it's keep.

For carry primarily, id go 19 all day. I love mine (3 now) and carry one daily.
Until earlier this year I was all hardcore 9mm and 40s are stupid. I had been wanting a gen4 17 and ran across a "used" gen4 22 at a fantastic price locally so I scooped it up with plans for the 9mm conversion barrel. Well, more than 6 months later its still a .40 and ive really grown to enjoy it. I put some FO sights on it and its a tack driver, plan to keep it just like it is. I still don't carry it because the grip is a little harder to conceal, but I really like shooting it at the range. |
9mm. Bought a 23 a while back to compliment my 19. Shot it twice. Will be selling it soon.
Handgun rounds are all about multiple hits. 9mm all the way.
Would never ever, ever, ever give up my 19 for anything else.
I've owned a 40 and will never go back to it. 9mm or 45acp only IMO |

9mm is the fad, for now. View Quote Truer words have never been spoken. FBI decides one day that they want more limp wristed agents to qualify easier, so they justify a switch to 9mm and the entire gun world jumps on board. I will keep my .40s and you should too. The current market craze is pushing the prices of .40 guns, mags and ammo farther down every day. |
I love the guys who hate on the .40 while preaching 9mm is best but still seem to find a way to support and justify 45 Auto.

glock 40
no kick, easily concealable, cheap ammo. jk glock 19 is always the answer. |
One of the things that propped up the 40 in the 90s for us civies was the assault weapons ban. If you could only have 10 rounds which would you want, a lot said 10 of the bigger bullets. I have 2 40 cal pistols a Beretta 96 and a glock 23. The glock is my primary carry piece, because I have it and like the size. I shoot my 34 better but not a lot better. I also have a glock 17 and 34 but usually don't carry them due to the size.
If starting fresh from no pistols today I would but only 9mm and make sure I bought and carried the good 124 or 147 gr defensive ammo. |
Fact of the matter is, no one wants to be shot with either one.
