i always wondered why they called it 38 special when it has the same diameter as the .357 mag.

.38 is the overall dia. including the case.  .357 is just the dia. of the bullet.

i can answer that

the 38 designation refers to the outside diameter of the case

this nomenclature is left over from the old days

the old rimfire cartridges were "heeled", meaning the bullet diameter was the same as the case.  the bullets were outside lubricated, just like a giant 22 LR

when the 357 came out, there were already a lot of similar cartridges called 38 S&W, 38 colt, etc, so they used 357 magnum to give it a unique name

magnum means an oversize champagne bottle
