Armalite designed the "modern" AR10, and they have patents on the design, so any other company who wanted to produce patented components would have to apply for a license.
Other companies (ASA, Hesse [run away!]) are designing their own AR-style .308 rifles, but none of them are parts-compatible with each other. Specifically, there will not be interchangability with the uppers. There are people who buy Armalite AR10 upper receiver components and build custom-barreled uppers that are compatible with any Armalite AR10. -Troy |

Anybody can build a .308 AR-type rifle based on the Stoner patents sold to Colt back in 1959 as those patents have expired. There is one current patent on file concerning the relief of the bolt locking lug opposite the extractor to relieve stress, but there are none that I can find concerning the current AR10.

KAC was building the SR-25 before the NEW Armalite AR-10.

I believe that Armalite (Genesco) has some kind of patent on their version, which is NOT parts-compatible with the original Armalite (Costa Mesa) AR10, the Knights, Sendra, Hesse, ASA, or others. At least, some posts have left that impression.
Certainly anyone can design their own AR-like .308, but each of the above (except the Sendra, which was "original" AR10-patern, apparently) was a proprietary design (not parts-compabitable with the others). -Troy |
