I think I like the .308 caliber Garand better than the original. 30-06.

It seems more accurate and the recoil  feels less.  Am I a schmoe?

By the way, my .308 Garand has a chrome lined Criterion barrel, a Breda receiver, a Breda bolt and a Beretta magazine block.

I think that any World War 2 receiver should only be built in .30-06.
But if Beretta could build .308 Garands, then there is no harm in building a .308 Spaghetti Garand

Not crazy.  .308 is third behind 5.56 and 9mm as far as buying ammo in bulk and ammo forting.  .30 cal at .308 velocity is going to blow the crap out of something too.

It's the honest to god Joan Crawford of guns. I understand some guns need more care, cleaning, and maintenance than others, but the M1a takes the cake x10 over anything else out there.

Very true but only after the Navy did the deed...

For clarity I do have a CMP in .308 just to have 1 of each maker and type. It's all I could talk my CFO into.

I do love your builds and pic's sir.

I still need a spaghetti stick one day.

Here is Matilda Garandolini.   She is absolutely lovely and she cannot be compared with any M1A.  Matilda has a beautiful forged Italian receiver and everything about her is so perfect and so smooth.  I would compare her with a Ferrari or a Lamborghini.

There have been some recent "modern loadings" of the 30-06 affiliated with Ohio Ordnance Works rifles that are really impressive.  That aside, I agree that most NATO .308 seems much more accurate and easier shooting than older surplus 30-06.

I used to feel the same way.  But now I have a somewhat different view.  I think that American made receivers should be chambered in .30-06.

But some Italian Garands came in .308 straight from the factory.  If Beretta could build a .308 Garand, then there is nothing wrong in me having a .308 Italian Garand.

I had my Garand rebarrelled to 308 thinking that I would shoot it more that way.  Sadly now it really chews up brass so I don't shoot it much.

Definitely not a schmoe. And, the 7.62x51 NATO Garand is a USGI rifle - the Navy had a few thousand M1 Garands converted to that caliber for training, match, and shipboard use. The rifle was designated the Mk2 Mod0 (for a Garand with a sleeve installed to convert the caliber) or Mk2 Mod1 (for rifles rebarreled to 7.62).

The CMP sold some of each of the Mk2 varieties as barreled receivers a couple of years ago, and I bought a few and built them up. Here's one:

and my daughter shooting it like a boss

I find the 7.62 Garand to be a very pleasant shooter, with minimal recoil. Jim Thompson, who did a lot of testing with .308 Garands over the years, believes them to be inherently more accurate that the original, and mine certainly are excellent performers.

So, to summarize: Fluffy is no schmoe, and Garands can be 7.62 with no shame.

The receiver's already stripped, it'll never be original again. No harm at all in building a .308(it's at least a service caliber). Saw a barrel for sale in .270 once. Now THAT seemed like uncharted territory, figuring out how to load and keep a safe pressure curve.
