Im getting rid of my pos 2013 Dodge Dart soon to get out of the payment. Looking for something in the $2500 range to replace it. I know $2500 doesn't buy much these days, but im trying to get out of debt so Im not going to picky about my next vehicle. Can anything remotely decent be found for that price?

Something small and Japanese.

Civic or Corolla maybe.
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 8:24:50 PM EST
You are looking at cars made from 2000 to 2003...

Used Police car
Volvo wagon
Honda civic

4runner, at that price it will be old but it will be trusty!
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 8:28:49 PM EST
Mazda Protege or early Mazda3 2003-2005
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 8:30:11 PM EST
92-2000 civic or similar year corolla. Upside to the corolla is a timing chain, but I like driving the civic a bit more.

If you look hard one can be had for 2500.

Things to look for on the civics are the timing belt, trailing arm bushings, distributor leaks, radiator end tanks, valve cover and oil pan gaskets.

Town car, Marquis, or Vic.

2nd or 3rd Gen. Isuzu Trooper.

Why did you buy the Dodge Dart in the first place?
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 8:36:08 PM EST
Honda Accord.

2500 aint much...finding a car at that price that doesn't need another 2500 in work is going to be tough. This isnt something you can just ask on the internet, you have to search for weeks months to find the one, that is if you know what to look for...or get lucky.

personally at that price I would get a BMW e30 coupe but only if you are comfortable with your own repairs. They are simple and easy to work on and a blast to drive, and still look cool.
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 8:48:01 PM EST
That's what my dad spends on his commuter car every five years or so. He's had good luck with 2002ish Ford Focuses. I've had great luck with the 04 I bought new.

Toyota,

Look for a Corolla. Or an older Camry.

Plus, I don't bring home as much money as I did when I bought. Its turning into a financial strain.

Too bad you're not here in Maine- my friend is selling his 2000 Audi S4 with 192k miles on it with the RS4 upgrades to the front end, etc for $2500
There are lots of good cars out there people are selling because they need money. Craigslist is a great place to look.

Good luck man...

Selling the car outright. My payoff is right at book value,so as soon as I can get the repairs done its going up for sale. It wont sell right away and I would rather park it to keep the miles off of it and so nothing else happens to it.

My DD is a 92 Ford Ranger with 105k on it.

So far, zero service.

Gets over 20 mpg.

I paid $1800 in March.

If you can't find the .mil surplus might I suggest a 92-01 Jeep Cherokee 4.0l inline 6 GAS?

Can be had in your price range ....dependable...will go 300k easy and has hands down the best web resources and cheap parts network.

15-19mpg lots of cargo.
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 9:58:33 PM EST
Honda Civic or anything GM with a 3.8 if you want something bigger. Ford Taurus with the 3.0 v6 aren't bad, either.
Stay away from Chryslers or anything European in that price range.
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 10:12:07 PM EST
Definitely a civic. Can easily be had for that price range. Reliable, easy to work on, and get great gas mileage.
Link Posted: 12/12/2013 10:24:46 PM EST
Mid 90's to mid 2000's LeSabre, Bonneville or Delta 88.

3800 V6

Reliable, efficient and some pep.

Show me one that nice for $2500!

They seem to push 4K for the clean ones, unless you are lucky enough to get one that is close by off govliquidators....

OP, here is my recommendations in order of my personal preference:

MK2 VW Diesel (or gasser I guess..) - You can get a very nice one for $2500 that will give you 40+ MPG (Diesel) - learn to use a wrench though
ETA: 1990+ Mercedes 300 series diesel
Ford CVPI - you can find these all over, they get decent gas mileage and are all around great vehicles. Easy to wrench on IMHO
Honda Civic or Accord - can't really go wrong with one of these. Easy to wrench on for the most part

Things to look for on the civics are the timing belt, trailing arm bushings

You can buy my 1992 Honda Civic Hatchback with 224000 miles. Runs like a champ and you can get 40 MPG if you try…

Best car I have ever owned - had it for 15 years

Here is a more recent pic of it with my M416 trailer. I only paid 2500.00 for it. (the Blazer) I bought from a private party in Sheridan WY.

While that's awesome for you, I doubt the OP can find one that cheap. I say this because I was in the market for one a while back, and I never say one that was "worth" buying for under $3500. Maybe it's my location. When I did find them for less on govliquidators, they were 1000s of miles away and in need of some kind of work.

You my friend scored big time.

I know what you mean. Anymore, you can't find a decent one under 4000.00. The nice ones seem to fetch 5000.00 or more. Mine isn't perfect but I probably will never find one as nice as mine for 2500.00

Well, yours sure looks clean to me.

I even had the Wife on board for one. We were also looking at the Civi Suburbans that have the 6.2L Diesel.

Now I have my heart set on a 90-95 Mercedes 300TD, thanks to a guy in the survival forums....

I'm not sure what the market looks like in your state, OP, but you should be able to find a decent used vehicle for $2500. I picked up a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT with 67K miles for $1850 last month. I didn't need another vehicle but couldn't pass it up for that price, especially since it is in perfect condition and the owner had all the service records.

I see tons of Explorers for $2500 online. I know they aren't popular in GD but if it was in good shape I would drive one.

If 2000+, ask about wheel bearings. They seem to go through them often.

Other than than, and poor MPG, they are good vehicles.

My FIL is a mechanic at a Ford dealer (has been for like 20+ years). I asked him about an 02 Exploder we saw for $2500 OBO, and that's all he mentioned to watch for.
