An acquaintance of mine was extolling me with his valuable knowledge of fire arms the other day and informed me that the .22LR is the best round for zombies, since you can carry a vast amounts of the stuff, and it can penetrate skulls quite easily.

He then proceeded to explain to me the virtues of the M14 and how it was expressly  designed to fire the same round as the venerable AK model 47.

Naturally I Corrected him on the matter of the venerable M14, then informed him that I was skeptical on the matter of the lowly .22LRs skull fracturing power, and would submit the matter to arfcom for pontification.

I now await your words of wisdom about this .22 and my acquaintance, so I can due fully relay this information.

I had a friend who told me .22lr was the best round for zombies also.

I countered with a 9mm Carbine

If you can find FMJ 22lr.  I might consider that argument with your friend.    Otherwise, i would pass also.

Sounds like your friend is certified zombie expert. But he's wrong on this count. The absolute bestest weapon for zombies is a titanium Glock 87 chambered in .30-30, with a mil-dot scope for those long range shots.

5.56 NATO. Good for zombies and bandits.

I agree 100% for zombies. I will sit on my roof with a 10/22 and 50,000 rounds of ammo.

For the other kind of zombies, 556/308 will be my choice.

But do you take into account the degradation of the bone due to rotting?

I'd go with the .22 for a lower profile weapon when you don't want to attract much attention, or thin out the herd quietly.
You don't want to attract every frigging zed in a 20 block radius.

So.......let me get this straight..............

You've got this friend that has what you believe is "valuable knowledge".

This "valuable knowledge" is then applied to scenarios concerning zombies.

You overestimate the knowledge capacity of your friend.

I don't know for sure but I do know that I can hit a zombie in the eye with my lever action .22 a lot easier than I could hit him with my .308.

.22lr?!

Maybe if some hobos were rooting through my garbage and I wanted to scare them off.....maybe I'd pop them in the ass with a couple rounds of .22lr.

But zombies?

No way.

What is wrong with you people?!

So .22LR isn't powerful enough to penetrate zombie skulls, but it kills cattle and pigs just fine.

Alrighty then.

I think a .22 will reliably penetrate a human skull at the distances I can reliably hit one that is moving.  A suppressed .22 would be a good addition to any survival battery, but I would not want it to be my only weapon.
