Students To Protest UNC's Reluctance To Label Pit Incident Terrorism
'I Don't Know What Was Going Through His Head,' Suspect's Friend Says

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Protests are planned for Monday in the same area of campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where, authorities said, a former student plowed a sport utility vehicle into nine people Friday afternoon.


The College Republicans, Americans for an Informed Democracy and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies are sponsoring the event, scheduled for 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday in "The Pit," a central area of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Police said Mohammad Taheri-azar, a 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, admits he acted to "avenge the death of Muslims around the world." UNC police and local authorities, however, say they have not taken a stance on that interpretation, but are simply repeating what the suspect has told them.

UNC-Chapel Hill student leaders said that Monday's protest is aimed at the reluctance of the university to label Friday's incident as an act of terrorism.

"This is innocent people being attacked by an SUV, driven by a man who was doing it for retaliation for treatment of Muslims around the world," said Jillian Bandes, with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. "To me, that spells terrorism."

Taheri-azar, who is currently in Raleigh's Central Prison under a $5.5 million bond, is charged with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

Because of what Taheri-azar admitted to local authorities, the FBI is also participating in the investigation. FBI spokesman Ken Lucas said Sunday, however, that a federal investigation is still ongoing.

But were Taheri-azar's alleged actions acts of terrorism?

"I think (what Taheri-azar did) is extreme," said Dan VanAtta, a friend of the suspect. "But then again, I don't know what was going through his head. … Mohammed was a good guy."

David Schanzer, the director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, said it is fine for students to voice their dismay, but that they should be cautious.

"(They should) understand the roots of it and understand the strategies for addressing it in a constructive way," Schanzer said.

He takes the same position as officials at the Islamic Center of Raleigh, who have publicly stated that they do not condone the incident: authorities should decide how Friday's incident will be classified, and that the investigation should run its due course.

"Whether or not the FBI decides to charge this individual with a crime of terrorism, I think it was a terroristic act," Schanzer said.

It is not terrorism because he was driving an SUV and many liberals drive an SUV.  If he used a .22 caliber Chipmunk assault weapon it would be terrorism combined with right winged fanaticalism.

Kind of. Our local newspaper, The Daily Tarheel, made their own.

Oh, and disregard anything that Jillian Bandes says. (In my opinion) No matter what truth or validity might be found in her arguments, that's not why she's making them. She's a wannabe journalist that likes to push people's buttons to get attention. Most of her articles are written with the sole purpose of pissing someone off. Naturally because we are a liberal university, our newspaper loves her... or did anyway. "Yay for free speech!" Whenever a hot topic pops up on campus, you'll be sure to find her trying to cash in on it no matter what her actual stance is on the topic.

If she can't make it to prime time based on her own talents, she'll make a name for herself just by pissing off everyone. Then again, some might call her ability to piss people off with ease a talent.

I'm not sure where you're getting this from. The incident happened Friday around lunch. There wasn't much time to reconfigure the entire issue I imagine. There are no weekend issues. The next issue of the DTH will be out Monday, and I'm sure the Pit incident will be the headline of all headlines.

It took more than a year and with very little publicity to call the LA Airport (LAX) shooting in the El Al terminal in which 2 persons died by a ROPer, a terrorist attack.

The FBI and the SBI are both on this case, so I imagine the university will not "label" the incident until they do. They're the experts on this.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Terrorism experts say a man who admits to plowing into a group of people to avenge the treatment of Muslims fits the description of a burgeoning type of terrorist -- a lone actor unaffiliated with any organization.

Some students have called on school administrators to label Mohammed Taheri-azar a terrorist for his March 3 attack at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Although UNC Chancellor James Moeser has declined to define the attack, experts outside of the school have not been hesitant to offer their opinions.

"Well, he's a terrorist," said Solomon Bradman, chief executive officer of the Miami-based Security Solutions International. "In this world of global terrorism, you don't have ties back to any particular group. In this new world, terror comes from incitement -- it doesn't come from an organization. The only thing that makes this not look like a terrorist act is that he did a lousy job of it."

Taheri-azar, a 22-year-old UNC graduate, is charged with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury after racing through a crowded campus gathering spot in a rented Jeep Cherokee. No one was seriously injured.

Taheri-azar is at Central Prison in Raleigh with bond set at $5.5 million.

Taheri-azar's stated reason for the attack sounds like the motivations of suicide bombers in the Middle East and the suicide hijackers of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., Bradman said.

Taheri-azar, a native of Iran, sats he intended to kill the people he struck and wants to defend himself in court and believes a trial will offer him the opportunity to educate people about the will of Allah.

Such religious and cultural motivations make him "the perfect recruit for terrorists," Bradman said.

Taheri-azar's actions are also reminiscent of U.S.-grown terrorists such as Timothy McVeigh, who was executed for the 1995 bombing of a federal office building in Oklahoma City, said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at the California State University at San Bernardino.

"The battle against terrorism today is against a violent ideology rather than a well-organized, top-down group," Levin said. "It's just a matter of time before we get someone -- an immigrant or someone American-born -- who commits a higher-intensity act of terrorism."
