It's a US ad.....I'm just unfortunate enough to have to see it up here.

1000x magnification = 10 power

Alright, this is good to know.

So it's a 1-10x?

Can you explain the circumstances that would cause someone to be charged with false advertising? What kind of crime is it? What are the penalties?

I've seen the ad on cable-
I think the ad says "1000% magnification"
1000% = 10X

Its a cheap 10X50 bino

1000% does not equal 1000x

That is correct.  1000% = 10X    No false advertising there.

The real question is, what about those magic ear things that will let me hear my hot female neighbors complimenting me whilst I'm getting the mail?  What if they're not really very nice compliments?  Is that false advertising?

Interesting.

The commercial ad itself claims "1000% magnification" as seen here:

But the website very clearly advertises "1000X magnification" on their homepage:

Yah you can see things 35 miles away but will not be able to tell what they are...Is like them pot metal mexican made rifles that have been rendered "non firing" by the maker, was $29.95.Is a thing I got sucked in on years back and callled the joint I got it from once it came as not a real gun and they said keep it and sent a money order back for my troubles.I actually sold that thing in a yard sale for a c note last year ,was a replica of a Colt revolving rifle.
All those deals you see is cheap chinky shit now with more money spent on ads thatwhat the shit is worth

I see your comparison.  I've never looked at their site - just saw the ad on TV, and that didn't interest me enough to pursue it - not really hard to figure out you won't be getting ANY decent
binoculars for anywhere near that price range.
Does appear their site says "1000X"
I guess they suppose the folks who would buy these probably would not likely be ones who differentiate 1000X from 1000%

1000x magnification is just as correct as 1000%, as long as x is equal to 0.01.

1000x magnification = 10 power

1000x = 1000 power.  1000% is not 1000x.
