I'm spinning Hot Rats at the moment, and I think it's decided - at least in my mind: This is the greatest Zappa LP ever. Every last solitary song on this thing is a fine piece of musical genius. It's the perfect blend of pop sensibility (so that you can actually sell a few copies) and music nerd sophistication. That's a tall order and nearly impossible to do, but he somehow did it.

The funny thing? I'd bet this was one of Frank's least favorite albums, if'n he was alive to talk to you about it.

Hot Rats is a fave, but there are too many.

Saw Zappa and Beefheart on tour in Philly.  One of the best ever.

"If Frank hadn't come along at that time, I was kind of at the end of my rope. I sometimes wonder what would have happened," he ponders. "I don't think I would have been able to go more than a few more years without feeling like a grandiose failure . . . I might have had to be one of those people who plays music for fun and has an actual job . . . Heaven forbid!"Belew's stint with Zappa opened plenty of doors, and soon he was playing with Talking Heads, David Bowie, and numerous other marquee musicians before becoming a driving force in King Crimson. Belew's progressive approach to guitar playing, along with his technically challenging songwriting, which powered Crimson, the Bears, and his solo efforts cemented his reputation as a thinking man's musician.http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/music/how-frank-zappa-saved-adrian-belew-from-being-a-weekend-warrior-6590482

I'm about your age and until about 10 years ago the only thing I'd heard was his song warning about eating yellow snow.

I knew who he was, but always thought of him as the weird guy with a band. After all, who names their kids Moon Unit or Dweezil? Then I saw a documentary about his band and started listening to some of his music. You have to admit he's extremely talented, even if his style is not one you like. I haven't heard all of his albums, but I really like "Jazz from Hell". I have that album, and "Strictly Commercial, the Best of Frank Zappa"

This. The man didn't seem to care about making a whole lot of money because 99% of the songs couldn't be played on the radio at that time. But the music and guitar work was awsome. Loved it still do.
