The engineers in my office solved this problem by importing some 4 color/5 function  pen/pencil's from Hong Kong

Didn't use the flash for either picture. The before picture caught a little more light from the overhead recessed lights in my kitchen.

The top one has a flash directly to the clock creating glare, the bottom one has the flash pointed just away from the bottom of it creating considerably less glare.  

I get what you're saying, but the photo doesn't give the entire picture.
