I really don't think the public is ready for Virtual Reality gaming, And I think its going to open a big can of worms mental disorders.
Just look at the effect that World of Warcraft has on some. Now think of these addicted people hooked up to VR! There will be runs on catherders so they can stay in the world. then your going to get the users that are addicted to the new world that they control.
The Walter Mittys will just chose to stay in where they can control the world that they see. Just think about having to deal with theses people in the real world when they spend so much time in the VR world. think its bad right now with the im all that and a bag of chips attitude, wait till they have been in for a few months.

Then your going to get the weak that cannot separate real from their VR world. Man I wish I had the bucks to research the affects of VR on the brain. Shit how do I go about getting a grant? If you think about it what is reality? if we plug the eyes, ears and touch into a PC then does that become the new reality?

My brother was one of the first guys to purchase an Oculus Rift from Kickstarter for developing. . . .

It's pretty cool, but we're a long ways off of actual VR gaming IMHO.

I tried the new, higher resolutions ones at PAX and it's still a way off. . . . might be a problem our kids have, but I don't see it in the immediate future.

Are you kidding?

Ever play an arcade shooting game for more than five minutes?  Your arms get tired just holding the plastic gun up.

Any sort of true VR (and not just a new display method for existing 3D style games) is going to be a workout and a half.

If we could get all our gamers to carry around a full-weight rifle for as long as they play CoD now, we'll have an enormous army of absolutely jacked nerds running around.

their are a few that are swapping the screen for higher res, and less SDE. STEM is about to release a 5 piece tracking system. so all limbs will be usable. I don't now man its going to be a really weird world when it matures in tech. And it will mature fast since they are keeping it pretty much open source.

I have a OR on order. Im going to take one for the team.. Just have to find some cathaders for those long in gaming sessions.

How the hell should I know?

Though I'd wager those fur suits are hot as hell, and would tend to intensify a workout.

On the bright side, arfcom basement dwellers will be gettin' some on a regular basis.

but look at this when the tech is full blown, more people are going to want to stay in the safe fun world than the real cruel world. And if you think people are self absorbed wait till then!

I say. They have to wear whatever they are kitted out for in the game.. Separate the men from the boys!!

The. Again I would also be willing to bring my own weapon. Have them swap out the upper with a blank firing one the vr would be the environment and if you get hit. The vr would physically knock you down.

Wow.

Only from the seriously weak minded imo.  Its just a game world, how someone could walk away seriously fucked in the head from watching pixels get smoked would usher in a new level in human stupidity.

of course people already seriously think that video games cause violent massacres.

He is holding a one-meter-long piece of heavy rebar with tape wrapped
around one end to make a handle. The rebar approximates a katana, but it
is very much heavier. He calls it redneck katana.

He is in the kendo stance, barefoot. He should be wearing voluminous
ankle-length culottes and a heavy indigo tunic, which is the traditional
uniform, but instead he is wearing jockey shorts.

Sweat is running down
his smoothly muscled cappuccino back and exploring his cleavage.
Blisters the size of green grapes are forming on the ball of his left
foot. Hiro's heart and lungs are well developed, and he has been blessed
with unusually quick reflexes, but he is not intrinsically strong, the
way his father was. Even if he were intrinsically strong, working with
the redneck katana would be very difficult.

He is full of adrenaline, his nerves are shot, and his mind is
cluttered up with free-floating anxiety - floating around on an ocean of
generalized terror.

He is shuffling back and forth down the thirty-foot axis of the room.
From time to time he will accelerate, raise the redneck katana up over
his head until it is pointed backward, then bring it swiftly down,
snapping his wrists at the last moment so that it comes to a stop in
midair. Then he says, "Next"'

Theoretically.

In fact, the redneck katana is difficult to stop once it
gets moving. But it's good exercise. His forearms look like bundles of
steel cables. Almost. Well, they will soon, anyway.

LMAO at the guy saying people will get tired.. that is true... most gamer's aren't in excellent shape.. at least the ones most likely to be subjected to the mental problems.. we already have mental problems associated with gaming.. look at all the examples of those MMORPG never-ending games where these kids stay up for days/weeks at a time.. and eventually kill themselves after they fall asleep and later wake up to find their sole life's purpose has been raided.. all of their 'virtual' stuff gone.. Adam Lanza is said to have $2500 in shooting games.. I don't think videogames are the problem and am not attacking them but what is the problem is the people who only play these certain types of games and do nothing else.. not to mention most of them probably already had issues going on..

columbine & newtown seem to share many common threads..and blaming video games is by no way my intent!

I think when the line between reality and fantasy gets so blurred it's hard to tell there will be some new issues to deal with for sure.. but once again a MAJORITY of people will not have any issues!
