My 5.56 collection is GTG so I'm looking at buying a 308/7.62 rifle, primarily for fun and just curious what everyone's favorite is.

I was thinking something semi-auto and mag fed....
Like this Springfieldd M1A Socom 16
http://www.springfield-armory.com/products/m1a-socom-16/
Probably put a low powered scope on it and a light weight bipod.

But i'm open to all ideas as I have never owner or even fired a 308 before so I dont really know whats out there.

L1A1, 'cause its the only one I have.  Hoping to swing an AR10 (well, a clone) someday.

Favorite?  M14 and assorted clones.

SHTF?  An AR10 variant.

I have owned both the FAL and AR10. AR10 buy a mile. If I ever buy another semi auto I think I would buy a SCAR17

At the moment, this.

Got to shoot a FA M14 last week, that was fun! It just felt right in my hands.

I like them all, mostly!
AR10 for ease of optic mounting + accuracy.
FAL for reliability, cheap mags & history.
M1A because they are just cool, especially the short. Versions.
Saiga for durability + general handiness of the 16" version.
Galil, see saiga.
HK 91 kicks too hard for a 7.62 & really beats up the brass.

This.   I have owned several 308 battle rifles over the years to include FALs and M-1As.  But the German HK91 I have is the one I liked the best.

Got rid of the others but still have the HK 91.

I know some people complain about the recoil but it does not bother me.

But to each their own.

Favorite is the M14/M1A.

The one I'd choose for work: probably the LMT MWS.

Have examples of all of them- Galil, HK, FN, M1a, Ar10......

IF the AR pattern guns would use common parts across builds.....and have been tested enough to settle on "what works" as has been done with the AR15....it would easily be the favorite but I have seen too many of them that were not reliable or broke quite easily....

I was trying to decide this myself, I wanted to go with a PTR since mags are so cheap, but I wound up building an Aero rifle for less than the cost of the PTR I wanted, and 308 Pmags aren't that pricy.

Yea.  I liked the one I had and wished I had not gotten rid of it.   It was a good rifle.

Armalite AR10 carbine.

I have an LRB M14SA, it's great, but at the end of the day it doesn't do much that a Garand can't at 1/3rd the price. AR10 is where it's at, especially when you bring optics into the mix.

I really like both my SCAR 17's and my FAL. Also have several other 308 hunting/target shooting rifles. My HK91 rarely gets fired anymore.

Right now it's my James River Armory Rockola M14F.

New forged receiver, new forged bolt, chrome lined criterion barrel and the rest all GI parts.

Was going to sell it to fund another project but just can't part with it.

Such a sweet shooter !!

FALs are great too.

M1A, because I carried an M14 in VN. As an equal opportunity kinda guy I also have an H&K, and a FAL. A .308 AR of some sort is in my future, and I have the parts for a .308 Garand.

I love my Scar 17. Had a fal and cmmg 308 before this. The cmmg was very nice with the geiselle trigger, and magpul prs stock. The fal I hated, just didn't do it for me.

I own them all, FAL, HK-91, M1A, but the AR-10 is the one I shoot the most and get the best accuracy out of.

I have a Scar 17, an AR-10 and a Savage FCP10HS bolt gun.  The Scar wins out of the guns I have.  I had the chance to fire a full auto FAL over the 4th of July holiday, it's pretty slick I must say!

I really would like to own a M1a Scout.  But since you asked for ideas I vote also for the Spanish FR8.
