Temporary importation of SAWs and LCAFDs is now lawful under the provisions of Title 27, CFR, section 478.115(d) because firearms that are temporarily imported are not required to meet sporting purpose requirements.- BATFE

So our European friends can visit with their guns it looks like.

Or since 9//11 is it illegal to import a SAW by a resident of another country?

I think it has to go into a customs bonded warehouse to be demilled.

I think your right captainpooby I know thats how C.A.I. and the rest of them imports all their rifles but they must be chopped up before leaving I could be wrong though. Someone needs to get one of those warehouses and then put a range in it.

But we are talking about temporary imports of SAWs under the 89 import restriction.

In and out.

Its illegal to import them. They are allowed to be "temporarily imported" so they can be de-milled in a customs bonded warehouse and then become nothing but machine parts. IE "parts kits".
I'm not an expert but correct me if I'm wrong.
ETA: mag imports were always allowed through a loophole if they had no date stamp.

It would be a shame if they fell in a lake or river and were lost...

The rule exists to allow folks to travel from somewhere with a gun, use it, and take it home.

It is also the same rule used by CAI and others to bring in guns, demill or US-parts them, and then re-build them...

CAI doesn't cut up ALL the guns they bring in -> AKs are not chopped, for instance...

IIRC they only choip the CETMEs because you have to in order to get enough US parts...
