Franklin County Anthrax Scare
Oct 15, 2001

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department is investigating what they call a suspicious substance found in the Swifty Serve convenience store in East Point, across the river from Apalachicola.

Franklin County Emergency Management Director, Tim Turner, said the eight people entered the store around 6:30 Sunday Morning and that the clerk thought they were acting in a suspicious manner.

When they left, she checked the bathroom and found a suspicious substance on a paper town in the trash can.

The clerk immediately felt a sensation of burning eyes, nose and throat.  She called police.

In all, 15 people were exposed to the substance and all seem to have suffered the same symptoms of burning eyes, noses and throats.

All were examined by the Franklin County Health Department who say that the people may have been exposed to some kind of chemical substance.

Investigators are not sure what the substance is.  It was removed from the convenience store by Bay County Hazardous Materials Response Team and will be analyzed at a Jacksonville laboratory.

Several of the original eight people have been detained for questioning.  There have not been any arrests yet.
