I base this on nothing other than opinion, but I guess I'd prefer a shotgun, but only if with buckshot or slugs.

Shotgun.
No handgun is going to have the stopping power, and the shotgun is easier to hit with. I'm not to worried about black bears, especially deep in the woods. browns are another matter and a lot harder to kill. hug.gif |

Of the two choices, I'd take 12 guage slugs--lots of 'em. That is, if I didn't have a .338 or .375 with me... Pistol only if I couldn't run fast enough. Bears are bad medicine. |

The biggest gun you got, I have never hunted bear, but from the looks of a critters, I am not sure if a shotgun would get you the kind of penetration you would want.

Persuader loaded first two slugs and the rest 00 Buck. My strategy would be to try to put it down "out there" with the slugs but all up in its face when it got closer. After it was blind from a few to the face I hope I could take of at 90 degrees from the charge and get far enough away for it to bleed out.
Then if I was triumphant go back and |

The spray works fine, but after a little time they will come back to the spot and straight roll around in the stuff. Buddy of mine up in AK with NOAA told me he saw this on numerous occasions w/ grizzlies in Glacier Bay.
Personally, I'd want a minigun, but I'd settle for a 12 gauge. |

you sir are FUNNY  I would take the handgun, in .45, preferable a 1911 or someother full sized pistol. where as the shot gun puts out a wide pattern, I can dump 7rds of .45 in the time it takes to rack the shotgun and fire again. plus I feel more comfortable with a pistola. |

That's a pretty easy question to answer. Mossberg 590 with 3" slugs. Of course I'd have the bayonet with me as well so I can get me one dem cool bear skinded rugs.

A friend of mine just blasted a black bear that was giving us problems and started getting aggressive. SHot it with a 12 gage slug as he never shot one with a shotgun before.
Skinning it out for Fish and Game, it did not look much more than a big dog. 45 Auto all the way. |

I'd like an HK USP 45 Tactical with Triton .45 super "hunter" rounds loaded into 12 round mags.
Although the idea of a rem 1187 police model shotgun with either 00 or #4 buckshot and a few slugs does sound good. Especially the blinding with buckshot part followed by movement out of the direct path of the bear and the a coup de grace. Chris |

To repeat: A Mossberg M590A1 with 3" magnum slugs and 00 buckshot loads. Slugs loaded first and last; buckshot in between. Slugs for the vitals; buckshot to blind.
Funny...I was just talking about this with my daughter today. She had a 300lb black bear pay her a visit the other day. Scared the hell out of her. She had just brought in the 2 year old and the dog, who had been playing in the yard. |

.45 ACP if that's what yah got, it's better than nothing. However I think the lowest power handgun would be a .45 Colt (aka .45 Long Colt) with Cor-Bons, next a .44 Magnum, maybe Long Barreled .357 with at least a hefty 158 grainer. Anything less and you are looking to get an angry and not disabled bear. Now a faat fumb and happy broadsie shot to the heart or shoulder arteries might do it with a .38 or 9mm, but I wouldn't want to make a habit of it.

Made up a hand load for my .454 for this beary
 I mean very thing. 370 gr. hard cast bullet over 25 gr. of WIN.296 . Chronographed at 1400 ft. per second and generates around 1550 ft. lbs. of energy. Prints 2 inches at 50 yds and will completely penetrate 28 inches 0f wet hard packed phone books plus 1 1/2 inches of plywood after that ! If he/she can take 6 of these and is still coming , it was my day to die! Ofcourse that is if it can catch me! I can still run pretty fast even with my drawers full of crap !! Take care. Coondog

Lot to be said here. On Kodiak island, I used to carry an Ithica short barreled pump with slugs. Once I was picking salmonberries unarmed and looked up at the biggest Brownie I'd ever seen right behind the bush. I turned and ran for the nearest tree and when I looked back to kiss my ass goodbye, he was running in the opposite direction. Shook like a paint mixer for quite some time. |

happened to our family friend when i was 12. i was at the next "camp" over when it happened. i was in the U.P., the most remote part if you will. when all were accounted for that night but him, there was a little concern. but as things developed it was far worse than imagined.
the guy was 6'2" and got his ass whooped by a 90lb bear. i saw him in the hospital 2 days later. his arms were badly mauled, upper lip was barely hanging (the reatatched it), one eyelid was nearly removed. IT IS NOT THAT BEARS ARE THAT TOUGH TO TAKE DOWN, THEY MOVE VERY FAST AND VERY, VERY QUIETLY!! they can sneak right up on you with out making a sound. i recall staring out our camp window as a boy patiently for HOURS waiting for one to apear. there would be nothing, then i'd blink-and them BAM, out of nowhere one would materialize. spooky shit |

Shotgun with SLUGS.. Or a rifle of at least 30-06 or larger, with the heaviest bullet weight available in that cartridge... Buckshot and pistols are a waste, except that .44mag and similar will work on black bears in a pinch... Bears do have a slow metabolisim, so you need a CNS shot to stop them. Even a clean hit thru the heart will leave it alive long enough to kill you. Also, you will not have time for a 'mag dump', so make your shots count. Semi-auto is preferrable in either rifle or shotgun... |

Ditto on the quiet - I was working away from the camp last fall late every night. Damned black bear would be watching me from 40-50 yards away, and I had to keep an eye on it while working. It was not so bad when I could look up and see him. He had a habit of dropping out of sight when he knew I saw him, and he would pop up in another direction, 40-50 yards away. You did not hear him, even in the dry tundra.
This went on for about a week. I think he was after the blueberries that grew all around where I was working, and just all around curious about people. Never thought I would rather be checked out by that gay interior decorator over anything other critter. Some bears pretended we did not exist. Four of us were working and a scruffy old bear walked right past us 10-15 FEET away, and only glanced up at us as he padded by. That bear I mentioned earlier stopped putting up with yelling, stone throwing and getting chased away and started dealing his own trouble. Bad move. |

I always carried a short barrel Mossberg 500 AND my .44 Mag while stationed in AK. First 2 shots in the scattergun were 7 1/2 birdshot, the rest sabot slugs.
I figured the first shot would be a noisemaker to hopefully scare it away. second shot would go to the face and hope like hell to blind it. (The .44 was to shoot my fishing buddy with so I could be sure of outrunning him.) |
