There is a book I read about that mission, maybe Killing Yamamoto. Lamphier had claimed the shootdown but I believe it was changed to a 1/2 kill. Mission was planned perfect and Yamamotos promptness was the last nail in his coffin. His Betty went into the jungle and the other with his staff went into the ocean.

He claimed Yamamoto, solo, and a Zero, solo. He got half-credit for Yamamoto and none for a zero after records were reconciled to actual losses after the war. In fact, that dropped him from an Ace down to 4 kills, and he was suing until the day he died, bitterly claiming he had Yamamoto as a solo kill, while enemy pilots, squadron mates and forensic evidence from the crash site showed him wrong. Least he got a Navy Cross (and a half-kill) out of it. |

I found myself praying the natives would take off his head with the machete. Eat it or shrink it, I don't care. Just make him stop saying Stupid things. Who the Hell, travels to a remote jungle crash sight, to find a specific Airplane, and yet doesn't know what that airplane (or any airplane) looks like?
I'd adopt whole village and pay ten bucks a month for the rest of my life, for the privilege of seeing them hack that guy into tiny bite sized morsels. |

Interesting. Ironic that the guy drives to visit the wreck of an Admiral in the IJN in a Toyota.
For all the time I've spent running around remote parts of the world, I would feel wary following this crowd of machete wielding natives into the jungle. |
