I keep seeing this come up over and over here and on other gun Forums, usually in We Were Soldiers movie threads. Not to put too fine a point on it, but, YES THE AIR CAV (ala We Were Soldiers) HAD M16's WITH FORWARD ASSIST! No, they were not M16A1's (adopted in early 1967). They were XM16E1's, with FA and three prong suppressors. Sorry for the shouting. I feel better now.

When I transferred to Ft. Kobbe, Canal Zone in 1976; I was issued an XM-16E1.. I loved it...Everyone else in my platoon had an M-16A1
