I work for a organization that provides training, employment and advancement for people who are blind or visually impaired. Any time I meet a blind person in public I introduce myself and ask if they have heard of us.

The other day I was in the store, and I ran across a blind man with his partner. I told him about our organization, and asked if he was interested.

His response: "Fuck no! Gubment buy ahhl my drugs and food, wut I wunna work fo?"

I could tell he was completely blind, so SSI would be a no-brainer. The folks who work at our place all get SSI. The state issues a certificate (via a medical doctor) to indicate impairment,and we don't hire without it.

By SSI blind I meant blind on paper only. I've known more than one person who could jump fences, duck under clothes lines, or drive a car, right up until the moment you caught them. Then they would suddenly become blind again. "Who's there?"

If you would stop approaching them while holding a tin cup and some pencils while talking about job placement for the blind, they would be more receptive.
