Closing up a really dirty wound can cause problems with infection.

Keep it open so that it can drain and infected stuff doesn't get trapped. Let's it heal from the inside out.

FYI, for people unaware because movies and even books don't do it justice, you don't sew up a puncture wound, you need to let it heal from the inside out. They've known this since ancient Greece/Rome. Sew a puncture and you increase the likelihood it will fester.
