Taken from historychannel.com overview of Great Britain:

Great Britain has abundant supplies of coal, oil, and natural gas. Production of oil from offshore wells in the North Sea began in 1975, and the country is self-sufficient in petroleum. Other mineral resources include iron ore, tin, limestone, salt, china clay, oil shale, gypsum, and lead.

Does anyone know what portion of our fuel is imported?

then why is gas so expensive in england?

I think we could be if we drilled alaska.

Not sure on an exact number, but it is high.

We drill the shit out of this country though, and still have a lot more to find, and recover.

Don't worry about a shortage of oil.

From a typical reservoir, our current technology lets us recover about 35-40%

That means that out of each reservoir, there is still about 60-65% left in there.

We just have to figure out a way to get it out.

I think they tax it even more than we do for one.

England's tax is high i believe.

Basically, we arn't going to run out of oil for a very long, long time, but the prices will continue to rise.

I found this article, it is pretty good: click here---National Geographic, "End of Cheap Oil"

England, like most European countries has a very high gas tax. Somewhere around $4/gallon. European countries seem to have around $2-3/gallon taxes. I think most of the tax is used to fund their social programs (health care, welfare, etc)
