If you were offered an opportunity to tag along with a Marine or Army Company in Iraq for a couple of weeks, knowing that you may be injured or die, would you? For safety and pc reasons, you wouldn't be allowed to participate directly in combat (if combat errupted, you would be moved back to the rear, or wait in an APC or other armored vehicle until it was over), but they would allow you to carry your CCW just in case you had to defend yourself.

Knowing all of the risks, I would.

No.

Can I CCW an M4?

Your CCW isn't going to be of any help when the enemy insurgents hits you with an IUD. You might as well leave your pistol at home. The insurgents even took out an M1A Abrams tank.

I'd pay to go.....

If I could get the time off, and those Marine's would have me...sure.

IUD = Intrauterine Device = Birth Control
IED = Improvised Explosive Device

I am just picturing the terrorists throwing an IUD at a GI... "Take that infidel! Now your wife will not have children!"
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 6:55:16 AM EST
I'd rather tag along with the SEALs or DELTA
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 6:56:09 AM EST
Yep!
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 6:56:25 AM EST
I'd do it on two conditions. I would be 20 years younger so I wouldn't hinder the squad and if the shit erupted, I would be allowed to carry my weight.
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 6:56:30 AM EST
I think IUD is just a -tiny- bit different from IED. Mind you, if the enemy suddenly started attacking me with IUDs, I'd be very worried.

IEDs are rather over-rated, especially against tanks.

"Red 1, we've got a report of an IED at grid.. whatever"

Our SOP was to drive to the grid... Look it over with the tank's optics a bit. If we couldn't see anything, we'd drive up and down a few times, see if anything blew up. (Including running a tread over the soft shoulder). If that didn't do anything, then it was time to dismount and have a look on foot.

Why don't you just enlist instead of dwelling on the martial fantasies of a 12 year old?
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 7:20:26 AM EST
I never heard of any of the M1A1's getting taken out with IEDs, but I wouldn't sit in the APC if I were you. RPGs do a number on those things.

I think I might, if they let me carry my OWN Kimber .45 and AR15.

One of my coworkers did, first Gulf War, has the pictures and the letter from a General to prove it. (NBC Recon, we're DOD employees and he's the one that developed their training for the particular system, they asked him to go since there werent enough trained crewmen available)

I'd do it in a heartbeat if offered the chance.

Hell Yes I would! As long as I could arm myself for self defense purposes if need be.

You do realize that this board has a unholy assload of vets on it right? Knowing that, what's with the assinine question?
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 7:59:41 AM EST
They've knocked out a couple of M1s with IEDs, including at least one K-kill that blew the turret twenty yards from the hull. That was a rare one though.

Israelis have had similar problems with two or three of their Merkavas getting blasted.

uhh, isn't there a mechanism for that? Oh yeah, it's called "enlisting"

+1, But I'd want one of the crotch protector flak jacket thingies.
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 8:07:18 AM EST
Yes, but I wouldn't want to be holed up in an APC until things calmed down. I wouldn't want to be in that can when an RPG came knocking.

Yes.

Here you go... To get an impression of distance travelled, in the bottom picture you can just see the corner of the bustle rack in the bottom right corner.

Would you do a "ride along" with a Marine/Army Company in Iraq?

Hell, yeah!

But I'm too old for that shit. I sure wouldn't want to jeopardize their safety over my fat ass.
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 9:41:49 AM EST
The CCW pistol would be for yourself. If you have to use it, you are FUCKED.

I'd do it but my wife might not let me....
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 12:14:49 PM EST
I suppose you could call spending 3 months in Iraq as an embedded technical support contractor a "ride along":

The biggest suckage about it was 'no official carrying of a weapon'. This meant that sometimes on convoys I had an M4, and sometimes they gave me an M-249. Soldiers get pissed when you break their weapon down to check cleaning and give it a function check before you load it.

Next trip I am angling for an "officially-issued" M4. My contract states that I can be issued weapons and ammunition for "defensive purposes" only. Besides I hate cleaning the SAW.

I've already played on the two-way range, but be my guest. If I never have another exciting day, I've already had a few too many.
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 1:33:26 PM EST
Hell yeah, I ain't had my chance yet. It isn't a disgrace to admit that you wish you had when you were younger, or that you weren't allowed to due to eyesight, etc.

I'd go if I could carry my own weapon. I definitely would not want to be a burden on the rest of the troops.

Link Posted: 3/14/2005 2:03:45 PM EST
Your are kidding, right?

YES

I would go in a heart beat. It's not fair that the military gets to have all the fun.
Link Posted: 3/14/2005 2:20:55 PM EST
I am most likely going to go over in a year anyways, but if given the opportunity that you have provided the answer is HELL NO! I am going over because it is my obligation. I would not volunteer to go over to a dangerous land and possibly get killed.
